is this fiberglass cloth ok to use for glassing?

im looking at different fiberglass cloth to use on my eps board that im still making. my fiberglass supplier sells cloth but its qvery overpriced and i searched on ebay… and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fiberglass-Cloth-50in-x-14-ft-1Pc-6-48-sqyds-8-21oz_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6755QQitemZ220091912921

8oz cloth, but it says its a “satin finish” and listed as F72… not sure what this means… is it ok to use with epoxy for a board?

thanks for any help.

It should be okay.

Sluggo or one of the other chemists would know better.

thanks. can anyone else confirm this as well?

If you are ok with 8 oz then it would be ok. The satin finish is the type of weave, I believe its called a four harness satin weave.

well im building a board from home depot foam… so i need cloth that will be strong since the blank is so weak. does this make sense? i plan on using standard 1 bottom, 2 deck and 1 deck patch. even if it isn’t strong enough, i dont really care that much because my shape is so messed up already. i dont want to waste money on glass on this board. i just want to see if i can finish it and get some waves out of it for a little while.

would this amount of 8oz glass be strong enough? or should i do 2 bottom and 3 top?

If your shape didn’t come out well, start again!

Home depot foam is cheap, your gunna be spending a huge amount on cloth, resin, fins and plugs, not to mention a huge amount of time…

May as well have a good shape to start with.

Glass schedule will depend on what density the foam you bought is.

Glassing Schedules:

Greg Loehr – Thursday, 5 February 2004, at 12:05 p.m.

2# EPS - Use one layer 6 or 2 layers of 4 bottom… Use 2 layers 6 or 3 layer 4 deck.

1.5# EPS - Use one 4 and one 6 oz for bottoms… Use two 4 and a 6 for the deck.

1# EPS - use two 6 bottom… three 6 deck.

These are minimums. For strength, go up from there.

Might be best to be careful about unseen, untested glass, there could be issues, like contamination, an unfinished wholesale product or ???, that could cause heartbreak down the road after you’ve put much love, cost and labor into the project. At least do a ton of homework to build up some other options for available fabric, even if you get stuck with hi $ glass that net hier cost might be only be a tiny fraction of the whole project cost. I like the idea of gettng the blank shape correct to your satisfaction first.

I buy all my glass from http://www.thayercraft.com. You want to talk to Steve. Its a great company with a great product!
