Because I came across a ton of it.

Geofoam is a lightweight EPS (bead) foam. It can be used to shape. It generally will need to be spackled and is not as good as some of the newer 'Super Fused' foams out now. The price sounds right. Build yourself a hotwire device, buy some clear Gorilla Glue and get busy. There's lots of stuff in the archives about homemade EPS boards.

Looks like you've scored!
Thanks for the info. Looks like they probably have plenty of useable scrap to give away.

sweet D4! let me know if you want to borrow my hotwire. i might hafta swing by there and see what's going on, that's a lof of foam. i've heard they use it for displacement so they don't have to pour as much cement in a project.
White Christmas in the heat of summer.
The foam is used for what is called “canning out” to create voids within the concrete pour to be later removed. When they are removed generally they get destroyed. These voids are created to be electrical vaults or drainage collectors mostly.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed: On most of these big Caltrans projects they have camera installations and place Lo-Jack on their equipment. It’s also grand theft, even in the bay area.
I suspect this is 1 LB foam, so may not work in all applications...

Thats a good point and Im sure they’ll give away scrap anyway.
Ran across this link below while doing some research (civil eng related); specs mentioned geofoam, what's that? Well I googled it and holy mackeral -got foam?

Obviously it's been discussed here before, but here's a bump up fyi...
I spent eight years working right around the corner from there.
It compresses to easy but it will make a for a short time useable shapeable board.
