It was just a matter of time...

Someone was bound to take the Bert thing and run with it.

I dont think its right to coin it as Bert’s thing though…

Cerritos College Dec 2005…

While we were all freaking out because Clark Foam shut down…

Some people were already making comp sand boards…

The Nine Lights board at Cerritos College Dec 2005 was top quality and very light weight.

Woven balsa rails

?

What is that?

Maybe it refers to the way the balsa bands come together in the nose, in a zig zag pattern. I checked out his website. The “woven rails” were a nice touch.

The boards look nice. Crummy web site, though. Flash may have its place in site design, but not as the only paradigm:

7 layers of what looks like 1/4" balsa on each side seems a little over kill for a board under 7’ but I could be wrong again and don’t know what I’m talking about but that’s alot of wood and alot of wood bending.

Be interesting to see where all this EPS/balsa/perimeter stringer hysteria will end up in the long run.

Firewire will be a good test as will Aviso to see exactly what surfers will pay for high performance and durability.

Or whether in the long run we all are an inherent culture of cheapskates and the clones win. Be interesting to see when Pavel and Manny finally bite the bullet to offer clones to satisfy their ever hungry and endlessly growingly impatient waiting list.

Glad to see more efforts in the mainstream to make this construction more widely available as it at least gives it a fighting chance.

I wish them luck and everyone else trying to do this type of work in “production” volumes.
