I've got the itch...

Yes,Kokua,Aloe is best,ya.

Howzit Herb, And aloe vera is good for the skin also and you can grow your own.Aloha,Kokua

When I was a kid (only one century ago, really!) we had drapes made from fiberglass, and I don’t remember them being itchy at all. These were woven into a mesh and the individual fibers didn’t much resemble Volan or any of the other f-glassing weaves I’ve seen. My guess is that the technique for spinning the yarn for the drapes (and the clothing to which you refer) was quite different from that used for glassing material.

No direct experience, but some search results and a couple of ideas. Here is a link to an evaluation of barrier creams (Stokoderm, which I believe was mentioned in one reply) is included in the study. They tested the products against penetraction by a liquid, so YMMV.

There is a product for mechanics designed to prevent grease stains on hands, which if I recall correctly is marketed in the US as Protec. Finally, there are several “liquid bandage” products (originally just “NuSkin” but now there seem to be a half-dozen or so) that could possibly be effective.

I have one{for over 20+ years in a 15 gal. bucket, blooms twice a year). It’s my fav. next to my yellow tulips.

…All my neighbors/friends have used it at one time or another(as well as hundreds of starters for others)…it sits on my front porch for all to use…I just ask that you let me know first,if possible.

…Kokua,Still poised to fly your way…watchin the weather reports…sayin HI to Ambrose tooo!

Howzit Herb, Think it’s funny that the other posts talk about creams, liquid bandaids, etc which all cost money when like you they could be growing their own anti-itch organic lotion skin sealer. When you come to Kauai I’ll show you another plant that will get rid of staph and any other infections in 2 days and works so much better than the anti-bacterial products in drug stores. In Hawaii we have thousands of natural healing plants, but that’s another subject that we can talk story about when you get here. Aloha,Kokua

Yes,I’m very interested in just that,Mike…

My wife works for Paul Mitchell(reason for the big I visits)…and because of this,( and past experiences), I have learned enough to know that I have much more to learn…Your island is known for it variety of plant life…as well as rain…much like the Hilo side,ya…Can’t wait, been going over my wife’s killer schedule, and flights…The timing will be right,I can feel it …like De’ja Vu…or something like that???I haven’t been surfin’ alot.???not much at all really…waters’ way to dirty…and I pay with each dip…these days…TOO many hours soaking in the sewers of LA/OC…I guess???

…Funniest thing is…I graduated from Bell 74-75 w/ High Honors in Horticulture (my major,of course)and was a officer(Chaplin)of my chapter of the Future Farmers of America in my senior year…I also gave the prevocation at the L.A. Beautiful dinner w/ Eddie Albert hosting it…man time flies…not to far …hopefully ,that we can share our knowledge.

Howzit Herb, I can see it now, Herb Spitzer farmer extrodinarI remember taking a gardening class in junior high and being chosen to attend a Horticulture dinner/seminar with our teacher, but for the life of me i can’t remember exactally what it was about, way to long ago. The plant I was referring to could well be growing in your yard or near by since one time on a trip we pulled over on hwy 101 in Carmel and it was growing right on the side of the road. Most people would look at thei plant in their yard and pull it because they think it’s a weed. Mother Nature has many surprizes for us and a lot of medicine is derived from plants that grow in rain forests and the tropics. Got any idea when you might show up in Hawaii.Aloha,Kokua

Hey Kokua

aside from putting it on your outsides you can blend and strain it out and drink an ounce of it every night to keep the insides clean and free of bad stuff. Just like Noni juice.

Won’t cure the itch and it taste like pure sh*t(as does noni juice) but our family has been doing it for years.

There’s also a anti-colesteral plant you can grow, cook up and eat to cut back on the bad colesteral without taking those liver destroying pills.

Hey Kokua,

Do you remember the name of the plant in Carmel(Hwy 1)? Was it a Calif. native? Or, a description? I’m very interested in plants. I have 3 or 4 different species of Aloe in my yard, as well as, a large Calif. native plant garden( And a couple of acres of live oak woodland-chapparel).

Oneula, do you know the name of the anti-cholesterol plant? I’m a non-compliant patient of a doctor that believes I should be taking Lipitor. Heart attack now or liver cancer later? I’ve seen enough cancer to know I’d rather drop dead of a heart attack. If I mash up the statin into the Aloe jell and rub it over my skin will it prevent fiberglass itch and unfavorable cholesterol? Mike

Mike

I’ll try and find the name of the green leafy anti-cholesteral plant. Some kind of japanese pure green leafy weed like thing you boil up like spinach. We also juice that thing.

Yeah my maternal family side has a hereditary cholesteral problem my brother almost died and has had a couple surgeries so he’s full of stents right now. My paternal side has an inkling for death by stroke which is also lovely.

I was on lipitor and zocor for so long I had to quit due to potential liver damage.

Mostly we try to manage our levels by diet as everyone in our family has to watch what we eat.

You can’t go wrong with raw fish(sashimi/poki/lomilomi) and poi as well as boiled and iced purple okinawan sweet potatoes for carb snacks and lots of daikon(japanese radish), amui onions and watercress with your meats when you can get it. Pickled ogo(seaweed) and cucumber namasu is also great because of the vinegar content.

The problem is the kalua pig, porkfat laulau, kulolo, chicken longrice and squid luau with coconut milk. Then there’s the kalbi, mochiko/garlic fried chicken, crab, lobster, fried pipikaula, monkey island oysters, shrimp tempura, fired noodles, roast duck, kau yuk and all that other melt in your mouth dripping with grease ono stuff…

Smells like a potluck or luau in here…

That was mostly our weekend dinners down at the beach house

Needless to say in many ways we’re being punished today for the multitude of yesterday’s excesses.

Yup Oneula.,I buy my aloe juice at Trader Joe’s ,a great place to shop…I mix mine w/ friut juices,it helps the taste abit.I have several favorite herbs that I use from time to time…eases the lymphoma in my body"“”“”“”“”“”“”(YES, it’s time I let the cat out of the bag). It’s been all most two years that I have known. I was doing great a year ago or so but the tides have turned for the worst…lately…my own personnal war as I would have it…

…That’s why the long periods of absences here…(sorry,if at times, lately ,I’ve been so stand-off-ish)and sorry that you had to find out this way,but time is growing short for me now…tired alot

…Bill T. was the first to know from the sways group…At first I was terrified, now I’m at peace w/ my fate…I think of my mom and Shelby dog alot,it’s like I can hear them calling me.

…DON’T BE BUMMED!!!LIFE’S SHORT !!! LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST,I DID!!!

…Let’s say april Kokua…I’m not even interested in surfin’ so much as getting to meet you and others…also just had a friend retire to there from Seal Beach, Tom Norrell is his name…I would like to buy him and his wife dinner. If you meet Tom ,Tell him I’m still Kauai bound, and plan on spending time w/ him…THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING MY FRIENDS…YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT HAS MEANT TO ME…really, Thankyou from my innermost soul, love and kindness,Mahalo and Aloha.

Oneula,

Yup, Got it on my Dad’s side. I’m pretty fit for an 47 year old. I stopped eating ice cream, baked goods, fried foods, red meat(except if offered as a guest) two years ago. I eat fish 3 to 5 times a week. My wife says I’m gonna die of mercury poisoning. I even gave up Mexican food, my favorite. I saw an elderly Asian woman picking the ground cover on the bluff above Carmel Beach three weeks ago. I thought she was collecting cuttings for her yard so I asked her. She called it wild spinach and told me it was good for the liver. It’s not a Calif. native I’m pretty sure. Anyway, she told me to take some and mix it in a smoothie. Too much dog shit and pee for me, though. Mike

Dang, Herb! Keep fighten that stuff! Lost my Uncle just over a year ago and my oldest brother is fighting the fight right now. Prayers on the way, brother. Mike

Oneula has my mouth watering

Howzit rooster, Here in Hawaii the plant is called Lokahi but it’s also known as plantain I believe. It does grown in 2 different shapes. Most plants have a single stem vein running from the base of the leaf to almost the tip of the leaf and then there are smaller veins running perpendicular from the main stem vein. Lokahi has about 3 or 4 stem veins running from the base of the stem up through the leaf. Wish I had a picture of it to post, it grows every where’s here. The Hawaiians have used it to cure certain cancers and other ailments. You make a tea out of it for internal cures or you can just rinse it offf and add it to salads and it doesn’t have a bad taste to it. It’s also must have some strange magic to it. When I was with my wife it grew like crazy in our yard and I used it all the time, even my doctor was interested in it after seeing it’s healing properties he actually had me take him outside and show him the plant which was right outside his office . When my ex and I broke up I moved out and she kept the house but never uses the lokahi and about 6 months later I was at the house and couldn’t find it growing any where on the property. It was like it knew it wasn’t being used so it just stopped grwing there, very strange I thought. If I get a chance I will draw the 2 different shapes and post it for you.Aloha,Kokua

Howzit oneula, You are so right about the taste, it’s very yucky, but I used to drink golden seal tea and it tastes like dirt but very heathy for you also. We have so many healing plants here in Hawaii and more people should be aware of them and their properties. I have attended classes on them and there are some really amazing ones. Im trying to remember the name of one that you use the bark by mashing to a liquid form and apply to toothaches and it kills the pain, but it also kills the nerve. But after thinking about it it would make a root canals less painful if the dentist killed the root with the plant instead of the way they do it now. Aloha,Kokua

Thanks for responding Kokua. That’s the difficult thing with common names of plants. They are different from place to place. I’d like to see a picture or drawing. We have a small weed that grows in disturbed places(side of roads). Maybe six inches tall, small rosette of leaves from center, single flower stem from the center that I have heard named a plantain. Of course, I usually think of plantains as the small bananas used in cooking. Mike

Whoa Herb . . . man sorry about what’s going on. Hey I’m praying for you. Thanks for sharing the form and knowledge with me. It’s working great. It’s good that you’re positive, keep at it, I know you are a fighter and will hang on. Remember to pray to God for strength and clarity. Thanks for taking the time and being giving at the SD get together at Keith’s. Thanks for the motivation, and realization about life. This sounds movie ish, but I’ve heared that people use memories of others to help them go through their life, and you have lots of good people rooting for you. It just hit me while reading Oneula’s post, we just have to make it. Live. No choice, that is our lot. If it means anything, you’ve helped realize a few things that I’d still be in the dark [about life]. Thanks.

Howzit Herb, Now I understand what’s going on with you. I hadn’t picked up on this thread before P.M.ing you. You are young and strong enough both physically and mentally to over come this and I have fath in you to do just that. Do you have any way for me to get in touch with your friend Tom, any friend of yours is a friend of mine. Aloha.Kokua
