I’ve been doing some ding repairs and am getting the itchies from sanding. Besides wearing long sleeves, long pants, respirator, safety glasses and shoes is there any other way to prevent or remove the fibers from entering/ have entered your skin. A friend who used to be a professional ding guy said to take a hot shower to open the pores, scrub, then cold to close the pores. I tried that and am a bit relieved. I’d like to hear what else there is to do.
stop doing what your name says
Ha! The novelty of my username never wears off. Just like that damn fiberglass itch. I am the itch that plagues the swaylocks forum.

I’ll make a BOLD assumption here …
You are using your HANDS to hold the sander ?
and you are getting the itch on your WRISTS , perhaps ?
then you might want to possibly consider wearing …

[the 5 dust masks I am wearing in this picture ?
…not recommended , really ! …a RESPIRATOR is a MUCH better idea !]
And , by the way … I reckon “barrier cream” [google it] on your hands and wrists under the gloves does not go astray , either.
well , ben , I hope this helps
cheers !

i just hold my breath and close my eyes
Try coating any exposed areas that are getting the itchies with baby powder before sanding. Also, placing a large fan behind you to blow the sanding dust away before it can land on you may help.
and think of jesus
and keep your ears pricked
" and keep your ears pricked "
Why did you have to drag my cat into this?
…because it’s looking like it’s got issues … er… I mean , "the itchies’ , too ?
wherefore ART thou , o Art y one ?
ben
sorry , Art , but that’s not my favourite kind of pussy , I MUST say …
Post her name here so nobody else catches it. Mike
Try one of those head to toe “Tyvek” suits that OSHA requires for the boatbuilding industry here in the states.
I like the itch. Is there something wrong with me?
no monkstar its perfectly natural for all males (and a few females, they be liars) to like the “itch”
there are myths and some symptons associated with this pastime, like going blind or hairy palms.
but at 35 none of these ailments have effected me.
You guys are fricken killing me! The hairy palmed photo… Thanks. Mike
Hey Sir WAL
A friend who used to be a professional ding guy said to take a hot shower to open the pores, scrub, then cold to close the pores. I tried that and am a bit relieved. I’d like to hear what else there is to do.
There’s your answer, get someone else to do it! Or swap hands so it FEELS like some else is doing it!
Hey silly,
Anyone who puts Bubbles up on any website is the man. Trailer Park Boys was f…ing great.
sirwanksalot,
Get a new name, then we’ll talk about “itchies”.
----Crabs are a bitch, but they taste damn good.

Sorry to bring this thread back to a serious note
I agree with Chipper - gloves and barrier cream.
I use the stock standard Vitamin E cream that you can buy from the chemist (“drug store” for our Northern hemisphere friends)
Vitamin E cream down first, then long sleeve shirt, gloves etc.
Wash down properly after you’ve finished also…
I never have any issues with itchies.

Just keep doing it. None of the production guys even feel it anymore. Your brain, at some point decides it’s background noise and just ceases to perceive it. It can help not to touch the dust on your skin. First blow it off w/air, then rinse w/water. Whatever you do, don’t scratch or rub. I’m not even a sander and I never itch anymore. Embrace the itch.
