James Jones Tuberider

Very wordy post!

BTW, I was eating lunch on the SW cliffs when Boobie got the tube on his red board. Almost choked on the sandwich!

hahaheheh good one …

if that was the "waimea tuberide " board ??

sick !!

He’s riding that board in the “stylemasters” video [at Sunset ?] , I believe ?

…stay tuned …

Ben, I was remarking that post #1 was a big blank page, no words at all.

That day in Feb’77, we had just come in from the morning sesh there, drove up to Kammies for sandos, and ate them from the SW lookout which wasn’t crowded.

No, we didn’t go back out.

thanks Lee, I’m trying to find that issue of surfing or surfer …"James Jones tuberiding Waimea " , I seem to remember the article was called … a great article and photos …

if I do find it , I’ll definately post it here !!

got some other good shots of him on a nice looking triple stringered white board at Sunset , too …

ben

the white triple stringer…

chip…wat a classic old …add…stiff as a board…zip at the front…James has done alot…he still rips…I surfed many a time with him and have never seen him wear a leg rope…massive waimea, sunset pipe backdoor…picks his time…can wait for hours to get the best part of the day…good pic…aloha

hi Cheyne !

here he is at I think Ala Moana … by the way , did you see the shot of you from the “Stylemasters” thread ?

…there’s a few of your waves in that d.v.d. …have you seen it ?

Also , do you know where the “booby” nickname for James Jones came from ? just curious…

ben

I like the tripple stringer.

That ad takes me back ! What ever happened to Surfer House anyway ? I had one of their long john’s - thought it was the most flexible suit I ever owned (at the time ! - circa 1977-79).

Steve

Hey, does anyone know if James Jones still makes boards and if so where you can get them? I remember that article about tudberiding Waimea and him with the cleanest looking quiver of guns. I think those guns would still be totally contemporary.

Last time I saw James a couple of years ago, he did an appraisal on my house. I don’t think he is commercially shaping these days. But he is very much alive and kicking

…??

I’m extremely surprised you didin’t show actual pics of his tuberide at Wiamea…

That red board he rode was at least 9’6".

Earlier that day, I was out on my 9’6"er, Rocky on his 9’6"er, and NormHeitman originally from SantaCruz on his 10’4"er.

It was about triple bigger than your pics, a solid 24’ by Wiamea standards.

Wiamea can closeout right around 28’ Hawaiin, so it was breaking a little less than halfway across the bay on the outside…

“feet hawaiian”…that’s 20" to a foot , right ?

yeah , I’d LOVE to know where that mag / photo / footage is hiding …I’ll have to watch "fantasea " again tonight …maybe it’s in THAT movie ??

…I remember seeing the footage and being absolutely gob-smacked …a HEAVY wave , for sure !!

…does anyone here know what movie it was in ?

cheers !

the search continues …

ben

so , what’s Waimea like on your backhand , Lee ?

Over my head for sure…

Sucks dropping into 3, G-ing out on one, run for the shoulder (get smacked) on the second, and bounce out on the third.

3 outta 3, what a great record.

It was still backwashing when we were out, the lifeguards told us we were a little early.

But no one out, at least 10 with boards checking it out on the shore, we had to at least paddle out and sorta try.

Norm rode 3, ate one and lost his board all the way in. Long time swim, we paddled in after his last wave and made it standing on shore while he was still swimming…

OK, it was butt ugly… I always said I went out there, but never said I actually made a full wave…

not in fantasea…

I’ve seen JJ out at Three’s on a few occasions this summer. I’ve always admired his surfing, so stylish, smooth, precise, much like his boards, clean lines, nothing fancy, gets the job done. I have a video, “Playgrounds in Paradise” that has a segment featuring JJ tuberiding Waimea. Besides going for the tube, he had a mean bottom turn at the Bay. Duke winner once if not twice.

As of yesterday, he’s still getting it done @ 3’s
