Japan

Why is surfing so expensive in japan. And why do the big surf companies charge so much over there for what we pay about half the japanese price. Is there some big tax to export over there or something.

Supply and demand, shipping costs, etc. A shortboard is sold for say $350.00 to $400.00 wholesale, with shipping costs added could be say another $50.00 to $100.00,and then additional costs such delivery service from the dock or air cargo ( more $$$$) and perhaps the board is sold from the distributor (in Japan) to the retailer (additional $$$$), and that surfboard cost is now between $500.00 to $600.00 + . Retail mark up (here is the BIG difference compared to surfboard retail in the U.S.) is a standard markup of double the actual cost , now in the range of $1000.00 to say $1700.00 for a standard shortboard. sk
