Japanese block plane

Japanese block plane Just got one of these and it looks like the cat’s meow for reducing those stringers in the deck/nose. However, the blade is just “torqued” into the block - no adjustment knobs like on a traditional plane. Does anyone have any tips on adjusting the blade depth? Shine http://users.leading.net/~shine

does this plane have a metal wedge or shim that holds the blade firmly in place? if it does, then you have to tap the wedge or shim backwards to free up the blade enough to tap, tap, tap (for lack of a better description) the blade either forward or backwards to adjust cutting depth. then you force the wedge or shim back inwards to lock in the new setting. i have never owned one, but have seen pictures of them with the locking wedge (or shim, if you prefer). i hope your new tool serves you well. http://www.swaylocks.com/discussion/archive/index.cgi?read=2668

it should be just a blade in a wooden body. all you have to do is tap the front or back on the concrete and that will adjust your cutting depth. very cool tool, very worth the cash. there is no need for adjustment screws, the tool is that well made, that is why they are so expensive. i paid $45 for mine 4 years ago. the blade will hold an edge for a long time. > Japanese block plane>>> Just got one of these and it looks like the cat’s meow for reducing those > stringers in the deck/nose. I Feel you have better control with a little spokeshave that is sharp and properly adjusted. The Japanese planes are fine and I do have one in my room, but I much prefer the spokeshave. aloha
