Japanese Rice Paper / Screen printing?

Hey guys,

My brother is coming back from Japan this saturday, and i’ve asked him to get me some rice paper.

I’ve been using rice paper for lams, but is there a certain type of rice paper suited for lamination or is rice paper all the same?

And to anyone in Japan, do you know where he could get it in Japan?

Cheers!

Lavz My Bradah----------------If nobody helps you out with this one PM me and I will send you a few sheets of rice paper that is typically used for lams. I’ve got a stack of it. I havn’t tried to buy any here in Hawaii(Maui), but shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve got enough lams screened to last me until I’m old enough to quit this stuff. What the Hell? I’m old enought to quit this stuff Now. We’ve got a local silk screener here that does most of the lams for guys here on the Island. We also have “Ben Franklin” hobby and craft store. I bought the rice paper that I have from a hobby shop in Calif. I have my company lams that I had a screen burned for and screened by a professional silk screen shop. I also keep around rice paper to do special print lams on my HP printer. I have seen two types of rice paper ; The one that I see typically used for pro lams is thinner and transparent. The other is thicker and almost opaue. I have purchased the thicker type at “Office Depot” ( a US business supply/office store). I decided not to used it because I figured it would take to much effort to properly saturate it during lamination. So I always just stuck with numero uno. It’s actually pretty common(at least in the US) and you shouldn’t need to go such an effort to find a source. They grow a million times more rice in the Sacramento Valley of Calif than they grow in Japan or We eat here in Hawaii. McDing

I’ve replyed to you PM.

Cheers fellas! I got your msgs.

Hey does anyone out there know much about screen printing in regards to lams and fabric inlays?

I’m keen to learn and do more with them… or just too expensive and i should stick to letting 3yr olds finger paint my boards??

Cheers!

Ant

go to pearl’s arts and crafts

I would, but not everyone lives in america… so its not going to happen.

But riddle me this! Why doesn’t pearl’s come to ME!

Never understimate the predictability of stupidity.

I can take you there after work. my cell fone# is 080 5673 3680

sorry about my english. shahka.

If you need some I have a bunch of packets left from last year.

it’s just postage to AUS cost like 10 times more than the paper is worth…

I think the stuff I got works I use it all the time, kokua and others have used it and printed directly on to it.

Maybe if I stick a bunch of paper packets in the envelope it’ll make mailing worth it…

Let me know…

It’s actually chinese calligraphy paper

lavz,

I’ve been screen printing my own lams for the past couple of years. It’s really easy, and the only way I’ve found to get reliable lams that don’t run or bleed. Check out this site for the stuff you’ll need. +/- $75 US to get started. I even started doing tee-shirts.

Can you believe I’m down to 4 packs and will need to get some more in the near future. I owe you big time for what you sent me and would like to repay you some way. Do you use FCS set ups on you boards,if so I would send you a set of any fins and plugs you want as a show of thanks.Aloha,Kokua

Hi Oneula.

Yer the last few sheets I’ve used were from Hicksy, he said he got them from you. Truly a generous soul.

Thanks for the offer , but I think kokua would need them more than I do, I could probably get a bit more from Hicksy for now… but i’d need my own later on, so i’ll deal with that then.

Cheers for the offer once again, appreciate it!

Have a good one.

Hey Lavz,

You’re welcome to use some of what Oneula sent me, I’ve still got a couple of packages left.

Happy to share it around if anyone else over here needs some…even got a printer to do stuff on…

See the whole reason is because i’m making a board for my brother, and I wanted to put a pic of us on the bottom…

Could maybe get away with a large A4, but I wanted something bigger… Hix, do you have any means of printing with a bigger printer? At work or something?

Like say a3? And then the question is how do you get ricepaper that big etc etc…

Does anyone else know a good way to get a big lam?

Cheers

A

Yeah, I can split it over 2 sheets, join them both together with a small piece for the backing.

Email me the pic to see if the resolution will stand up…

Is there a name for the stuff that works well on surfboards?

Sure. It’s called “wax”.

(Kidding)

Balsa mate, I thought of saying the SAME thing!

Love your work B man… (not kidding)

A

Thanks, Lavz. Sorry, couldn’t resist…
