Just wanted to put myself out there for any swaylockians or swaylockians whom have friends or family in Goleta, Santa Barbara or Montecito. If their is anything I can do to help, from board storage to help evacuating send me a PM. I am busy until noon today and then free all weekend. Im grateful that my residence is near UCSB, and not in any danger, and my parents place is located safely at the west end of Goleta (surrounded by freshly burned GAP fire area), so I have safe places for storage of belongings. My prayers and thoughts go out to all effected and please dont hesitate to ask for any assistance at all.
I imagine if you’re affected by the Jesusita fire you probably arent logging onto swaylocks though…
Easternpacific (Skip & Sally) are in the mandatory evac zone. Hope everything is OK. It’s a bad one and appears to be zig zagging all over the place with the gusty winds.
I sat atop a parking garage around sunset last night and looking across Goleta Valley watched it march westward from one ridge to the next at an unbelieavable rate.
havent had decent swell/conditions combo in weeks, and now we do. there seems to be a wierd correlation between fire and waves.
hope the firefighters stay safe, the evacs seem to be going smoothly, reported at 20k people so far (evacuated), 2500 firefighters on scene, and a small air force attacking from above
Weird how waves come in times of tragedy–maybe there is some sort of correlation between the two. Waves can give people peace, time to find a higher power, a place to escape their daily lives and the economy, of course. To the people losing their homes to this fire, I hope you can find tranquility in moments out on the water. I’ll keep you and your fellow neighbors in my prayers.
hanging in there, and had a long night. It got heavy around 1:00am w/ enbers, smoke, and raining ash with crazy wind. I was able to put out a couple of embers before the winds turned favorable around 3:30 - 4:00am. there was a structure fire above me, just out of sight w/ Euc treesburning, but the heli’s (2) flew all night, worked it hard and saved the day. I got some sleep around 5:00am awaking to better conditions for us. Other’s though, on 3 flanks are in danger today. Waiting for the wind, crusing sways, on alert, need tortillas.
aloha,

This was Wednesday afternoon at Yanonali and Garden- the power had just gone out and gridlock was setting in.
Just now, from my place on top of the Mesa, it looks like its heading west towards San Antonio creek, and working its way up Mission Canyon towards La Cumbre Peak, and the upper part of Rattlesnake. Its jumped upper Gibraltar (and maybe gone through the Flats) and is heading towards East Camino Cielo and down the upper West Fork of Colds Springs…pretty much merging with the Tea and Gap fire burn areas.
its interesting to see the different prespectives… im looking at the fire from practically the other side its pretty different. Weather has been good today, not even close to predicted temps but we’ll see what the wind gods decide to do this evening.
This is what i watched march across the mountain last night at sunset.
One of my buddy’s back yard practically overlooks where it started, off upper ontare. 5 firefighters were assigned to keep watch over his house, and additional crews over his neighbors homes. So they hung out on the back porch and my friends dad brought them food and drink all day yesterday. Then the winds kicked up and they saved his home, some of the neighbors werent so lucky. KARMA?
These firefighters are my heros, all few thousand of em.
im off to go help my former employer manage the 50+ evacuated dogs she is taking care of, aka pick up a continual trail of dog sh!t. HA should be an adventure to say the least.
