Where’s Jim Phillips been lately?
Where’s Jim Phillips been lately? I just got home last night, 2 weeks to the land that time forgot. Temperatues in the high 90’s, humidity the same, water 85. There was surf from Kyle, Sebastian Inlet for the Doctor’s and Lawyer’s charity event, 3-4 feet steady with well overhead sets. I made the sporting section of the Florida Today pulling an air to floater on one of my pro riders new boards, a 6’6" x 18 1/2" x 2 1/8" round pin. With the 3 years on guns or longboards, at 56 years it was a shocker the first 50 feet of paddling, but it all came back fast and it was good enough to land me best Ledgend of the event. I had a lot of custom shaping for my former customers and contract shaping for other labels. Although I still have to stand behind my view that unfortunately the east coast Mfgs. are light years behind the way I have my factory set up. I took all of my hand tools, but left behind saws and other long tool that I was sure I could borrow. The saws were so dull that they barely cut through foam, let alone the stringer. Templates were as bumpy as I have ever seen and the shaping rooms were painted WHITE. Give me black, the blacker the better. Other than that, I wasn’t beatten, robbed or tossed in the joint. My old factory is an apartment now, the liquor store next door is gone, robbed 3 times in 3 weeks by the colorful natives, thank god for California!
thank god for California! you’ve got to be kidding! Damn, next time you’re this way let me know. I would’ve put in my order.

hmmm, so it is better to shape with black walls. I would imagine that the shadows don’t play as many tricks on you. Is this the reason??

Even dark walls with a coating of dust lighten up to the point of distraction. Light colored walls become an extention of the blank, with all blending into one indistinguishable mass. If perhaps, quality shaping isn’t what you have in mind, light is fine, but if crisp detail and even, clean lines is the end goal, go with dark walls. I want to see every little scratch, flaw, tweak that could possibly hide in a bright, white room.
Jim, I got your video a few weeks ago. It’s great. Thanks. I thought I remembered seeing a post on this site some place where you were going to set up a two day shaping seminar. Any news on this? I’m in the L.A. area. I’m new at this and it would be amazing to stop by and get some help or just watch. I thought the shaping classes was a great idea. There’s only so much a video can do. And what about the glassing video?>>> The folks that are close enough by get their shaping seminars when they > drop on by, Herb came by with some of his fine sticks and Magoo stopped by > for some impromptu shaping lessons and theory.

And what about the glassing > video? I think it was Cleanlines, my old schoole mate, who was drumming up recruits for a shaping class/seminar, where you would build x number of boards for yourself with the tutilage of a master craftsman. AS for the glassing video, Damascus has the most info on where it lies in the future schedule of production.

I think about that day every time I think of shaping, surfing, or developing fin foils. Thanks again Jim. Magoo

College kids are trading up. You can spend nothing on a system that will keep you Swaylock compatible. You know why I’m here. Two barrels and a body, hope that your well. SB
Herb: Yo! I’ve been up to my armpits in alligators with a new job. I’m still out here but my time online is very infrequen. I miss my workshop!! Got to take care of business first. It feels good to get by here once in a while and just sit back and scroll through all of the stoke that goes on here on Sway’s. I’m racking up some serious frequent flyer miles, I just hope I’ll have time to use them up. Talked to Cleanlines today and he is alive and kicking as well.
