Why use the PVC foam block inset around the fin box? I understand his premise. However, I’ve installed a bunch of 10.5" fin boxes in both PU & EPS boards and haven’t had any issues; no cracking or water leakage. Admittedly, these boards are not going out at Jaws. But the idea of making the board more resilient with this technique is very intriguing.
How does the PE gloss coat enhance the quality of the finished product over doing an epoxy gloss coat that contains extra additive F & xylene?
Bonus question: When running the glass patches over the fin box, it didn’t look like he taped off. Does the pre-wet of the surrounding surface and application of the plastic alleviate the need to tape off these orifices?
May be because it’s lower density EPS.
Poly gloss is far easier to make flat and to give a nice mirror finish.
You don’t realy need to tape off orifice when you lam over, resin don’t go in box if you saturate well and fast first go, main problem without tape is air trapped under saturate glass that push glass because of expansion with heat of curing resin.
for those that have used this technique. how smooth of a surface is left when you peel the plastic off? would it be smooth enough to do some art on with posca paint markers?
