it’s pretty slick looking. I’m guessing it’s mid-70s era. Can anyone verify. It’s got a logo that I’ve never seen before. It’s an ambigram of bing (see pics).
And to make this repair/shaping related, the glass around the finbox is cracked and I need to reset the fin box. What is the best way to go about that? Should I rout the opening slightly wider and fill with resin and filler?
Josh, sweet looking board, I like the curve in the back end. Can I ride her sometime when I am up your way ?
Does the box need to be totally reset or replaced, or just fortified? I have done the latter before, there are a number of ways to do it, but I am sure the true swaylockians can tell you better than me. I am normally a do-it-myself guy, but when it comes to replacing fin boxes, I would rather have someone with more knowlege/experience do it since the last one I did (luckily my own board) “floated” despite being taped and tapped down. I am going to have the fin box (torsion or leverage split the box about down the middle, along the stringer) in my 1967 Challenger (the one I rode at that Classic contest in Manasquan) routed out and repaired either by Paul (of Fly), Planet Blue (the PB factory is on my way to work, so it is easier than driving all the way down to OC, where Paul is), or someone else locally.
Sak, sure you can take it for a spin. I have a few other interesting boards from the same era that you might have fun riding. I should bring these boards to that Cosmic Expression Session contest (the one where you roll the dice to pick your board). Do they still hold that contest? I think it was down in Ocean County somewhere. If not, we should hold a similar contest.
I think I’m going to yank the whole finbox and throw a new one in. Drew in Spring Lake showed me how to place a fin box. Maybe I can recruit him for some help.
dubstar, thanks for the tip. That board looks EXACTLY like the one I got. The stringer patter is even the same. By the way, the board has an odd stringer arrangement.
Before you yank the box (if you haven’t already) check the horizontal slot for separation… Pry gently with a screwdriver and see if it lifts. If the box has split along the slot, junk it. If it’s OK, try injecting (use syringe and 18 gauge needle)resin along the sides where the cracks are. Keep a fin in it so you can check for vertical alignment. If any glass has lifted, inject under there too and put some wax paper and a weight on it until it sets. Once the cracks around the edges are filled and everything smoothed out, do a glass over patch. Gloss the whole tail. Easier and cheaper than a new box and it’ll look better.

Unfortunately, there was some cracking along the top lip of the fin box (horizontally). In addition, the box is out of vertical alignment and the box has sunken into the foam a tiny bit (i.e., it’s off kilter). A small piece of glass has lifted opposite the side where the box sunk in.
I think the previous owner ran her aground on more than one occassion.
I hate to have to do it, but I probably will need to pour a thin bead of glass/filler into the finbox slot to lift the box up a bit.
She needs some tlc, but she’s gonna be seaworthy very soon!
That has to be the coolest logos of all time…No matter which way you look at it, it still says “bing”. Was’nt that board on ebay? With a little work it should be a classic rider.

Ambigrams are often used by secret societies.
The board was on ebay. I had to have it. It’s an old shape but has a very modern outline. In addition, it’s not as thick as I thought it would be, so it should ride nicely once I get it all patched and restored. I’ll ride it every so often and just look at it the other 95% of the time.
Clean board. Foamdust - look for new Bing t-shirts soon. Matt Calvani has the rights to do the old logos minus David’s name. So far I’ve seen proofs for a red & yellow broken football (i.e. the concave underneath), '66 red, white, & blue, Lotus, and Karma. These will be nice additions to the standard football & Pintail shirts available now.
