K-glass + RR epoxy

has anyone around here used K-glass? i’m curious to know how it compares with E-glass – strength? clarity?

word is that the flat weave is harder to laminate, but with the way RR epoxy easily soaks into cloth (rather than having to force it into cloth like with polyester resin), i’m curious to know if it’s really any more difficult to lam with.

anyone?

I like it. I used 5.7 oz. k-glass and did it with Fiberglass Hawaii 2-to-1 epoxy and had no problems. It’s very flat and the rails draped very well. It was cheaper that e-glass too. I used it under 6 oz. e-glass on the deck. Very solid!

any experience with how well it takes a tint??

I used it a lot when I was building boards. As I recall the specs. for it lead me to believe it was stronger in a general sense than e-glass. As mentioned it is a flat weave with no twist. It was slightly more difficult to laminate, but not a big problem even with my limited abilities. It would take a tint well as I recall. The quality I liked the most was the clarity. However, I never used it with epoxy. Probably a good idea to test it first since it may have changed in make up since I last used it.

I wonder what is stronger than – S-2 or K-glass? I know E-glass is the weakest of the three. And strong in terms of impact resistance, or shear strength?

Aloha Soulstice,

check out Rich Harbour’s website, he uses Kglass on some of his longboards. For sure he uses Kglass on the “Cheater II” model. My “Cheater II” is pigment yellow.

thanks for the info, guys. i’ll put in a call to Waterman’s Guild glass shop and see if someone around there can spare a minute or two to pass along some knowledge. and maybe i’ll give Greg Loehr a shout, too…if he’s ever tried K-glass, i figure it’s a pretty safe bet that it was with epoxy resin.

peace be da journey…

hi soulstice,

k-glass and epoxy works great (i did not use rr epoxy however, but i bet that doesn´t matter). good and rapid wet out, and very, very,…, very clear.

the k-glass seems to be a little stiffer than warp glass, so it may lift off the edges. i had to push it down from timt to time until the epoxy startened to harden.

hope this helps

now, back to stripping the glass off my August (see my most recent thread).
