Kauai around Thanksgiving?

my wife and i are taking our 2 year old for a vacation and wedding. any ideas on low-budget places to stay? any other tips? i'd love to bring a board but that's proabably not going to be fea$ible. probably try to rent or buy a cheap used one while there. i'd also love to meet up with some Sway-folks... if PM's are better, that's cool... thanks in advance

Howzit chris, In November the surf can be anywhere' from ankle snappers to Huge and I mean tow in huge but there will definitely be surf. As for places to stay, try Craigeslist and look under Vacation rentals and look up Ambrose for a board. Do you know which side of the island you will be on since the north shore is he place to be at that time of the year. Aloha,Kokua

thanks Kokua, will do...

i don't know which side we'll be on. i will be sure to find out tho... we are going to have a rental car but, i just looked on google maps and it looks like Kauai is roughly the same size as Oahu but with no highway through the middle? if that's the case, it must take a while to get from one side to the other

I have a time share there,,, a bit to late to reserve,,,, I would let you stay in it ,,,at the Pono Kai in Kapaa down the street

from Ambrose,,,,

also its up for sale ,,,,,, cheep

if anyones interested

Economy down lots of places to stay. Recomend staying on Kapaa side ! will PM you with recomendations . What price range ? There are places for under a hundred a night like 70 or 80.  What kind of boards you like to surf?  Kapaa is half way to anyplace ! So your 2 year old is getting married ? Kind of young, don't you think ? I got some old beater boards under the house and in the shed  if no shame !!

ha ha ha, thanks Wood_Ogre, looking forward to the PM...

the wedding will be in the Poipu / Koloa area. under $100 sounds great. i surf mainly shortboards but am up for anything. no shame for sure... my 2 year old will be the flower girl in her auntie's wedding =)

thank you

Howzit chris, November is sketchy for the south side and the eastside is onshore winds as a norm except in the morning( think mainland) Like I said just check craigeslist since it has some great deals like as low as $50 a night on North Shore. I used to check craigeslist and some of the deals just blew me away.Aloha,Kokua

Check out Tamba's Surf Shop in Kapa'a. Cool guy! Tell him Kanaka Pete sent you.

We've had two pretty descent swells so far. Small kine...4-6 feet for the opening season here on the North Shore of Kauai and more to look forward to.

Surf for the South side / Poipu area will be nill at that time of year, maybe a small bump but unlikely.

Pono Kai is in Kapa'a and the middle of the Island. Pono Kai is well maintained, clean and close to major shopping, grocery stores & etc.

Aloha, PPK

thanks Kokua. i've seen some deals on craigslist for rentals haven't seen $50 YET but have seen a bunch for $85 for a one room, a/c, non-smoking, with kitchenette which is great... how long's the drive from Poipu to Hanalei? google maps says it's about an hour and 15 minutes? so pretty much staying anywhere between there would be good. like WO says, "Kapaa is half way to anyplace"...

thanks PPK, i will look up Tamba's Surf Shop when we are ther and i'll check into Pono Kai...

is there anything in particular you guys recommend for toddlers? for instance, if we were going to Maui, i know my daughter would love the aquarium. are there semi easy accisible water falls to walk / hike to? or???

Went a few years back…do stop at Ambroses’ if you can, he has a forest of boards. I met Topper there, with a big bandage on his foot; I had come back from Pakalas with a small hole in the bottom of my foot, that’s where he got his nasty infection. Super sharp lava, I’d bring a pair of reef booties. Oh, my bozo moment…constantly slipping off the rail ???..sunscreen on da legs goes on da rails; wearing a wetsuit for years, this phenomena was carefully explained to me. The driving is no problem if you’re based in Kapaa…have fun.

Howzit chris, How long are you gong to be staying since you can probably get a better deal if you are staying for at least a week, a lotof renters will give you the 7th day free if you stay a week or longer. Nightly rates will always be more, but check weekly rates ane you can find some good deals. Kapaa side will have cheaper rates since it is not a destination area like Hanalei or Poipu. Definitely check Tambas like Peter says. The drive frm Poipu to Hanalei can take a lot longer than an hour and a half and it has to do with the roadwork going on. There have been days when I could make it to Lihue in 45 mins from Princeville and then there are dys it took almost 2 hrs, you naver can tell how long it will take. Traffic can be a real nightmare sometimes and I used to always just hope it was my lucky day when driving to town. I will look at Craigeslist and see what I can find, do you have dates set yet? Aloha,Kokua

thanks Kokua.

we will be flying out on 11/25 and returning 12/01... i'll check in to weekly rates, that makes sense...

looking forward to this trip! woo hoo

Howzit chris, I just looked and there are a bunch of VR's at different prices and you might be able to get a better deal by doing a week. I don't know how many of there will be going but he possibilities are endless and lots of places. Even one for under $100 at HBR which overlooks Hanalei Bay. I think you will find exactly what you want.Aloha,Kokua
