This just in…Fairly confirmed report of a gray suited one tickling tootsies at Snst Cifs yesterday. Who wants to be the first one out at dawn tomorrow? That is all…
Trail ### on 3/5/08
San Onofre State Beach — On March 5, 2008 Kelly Lewis reported the following: “The shark was spotted at the base of Trail One, San Onofre State Park at approximately 1:45 PM. It appeared to be about 6 feet long. It was thrashing violently until a set of waves came in to float it (see photographs). It then spent another 2 to 3 minutes in very shallow water sometimes on it’s back, eventually swimming into deeper water and disappearing. Dozens of seagulls were circling as if an opportunity existed. I had just been knee deep in the water a hundred yards south throwing a stick for my dog that was swimming well out into the surf. No surfers were in the water. My clothing doesn’t seem to be of any importance. The shark came ashore independent of any human interaction. The beach has a very flat sand bar 300 feet long that stays flat out another 200 feet. However at the area this shark was ashore there are rocky depressions that set up drainage ‘creeks’ that run parallel to the shore to drain away higher sets that flood over the sand bar at or around low tide. My guess is the shark just got washed in and ended up stranded until another ‘flooding set’ allowed him to find an escape route. It was very lethargic after the set re-floated it, and as you saw in the one picture it was on its back. It also swam on its side for a period of time. I thought it may have been seriously injured. There was pinkish, almost a diluted blood look along its belly.” The pictured animal is a juvenile male White Shark, which frequent this area. Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

Lee,
i live right down there but am out of town in chicago of all places for a confrence…who saw what? exactly ? im really curious
I had just been knee deep in the water a hundred yards south throwing a stick for my dog that was swimming well out into the surf.
A whole new definition for the phrase “casting with bait”…
the beached whitey picture is now my screen saver. To remind to go to Trail 2 from now on
Wish he’d go to Trail 6 for Chrissakes!!!
you mean oceanside, right?
nope. I guess O’side could be considered T7 if you REALLY like to walk on the beach
I too generally feel “lethargic” after stopping in for a quick bite.
I guess my new mackerel necklace is making a bit hit!
I was wondering why N*&th G$*b!ge was a fricking ghost town today? only me and one other guy out…nice waves too.
Smelled like sea food chowder?
l00ked like cr&p to me… it was fun, hnuh.
I have been seeing a lot more dolphins out there lately, more so than when I was a kid…
Whenever I go back to Southern CA to surf, I hate dealing with the crowds, but I always thought that at least I do not have to worry about sharks. Guess I was wrong. We have been seeing more up here on the Central Coast (Morro Bay) the last few years. I did not see any sharks for the first 10 years that I lived up here. I have seen one each of the last two winters.
Yes shark it is, but really look at the bugger, kinda looks like a fat little mako. nothing to get too worked up about. I kinda feel bad, a Shame the poor little guy beached himself, probably sick or retarded; then another part of me says hey he’s on the beach and it does’nt get much easier for shark steaks, there i go thinking with my stomach.
Remeber when the seals were washing up with the red tide posioning, that felt kinda sketchy, i for one dont trust a seal and a sick one even less. Plus there be plenty more of those varmits than there are sharks…
We need more sharks showing up, i want them at swamis, cliffs, even la jolla shores on general principal just to scare away stupid people
One more reason to get rid of the seals at the “Children’s pool” in La Jolla…
Are we seeing more sharks because the reefs and kelp beds are healthy or is it human interaction. How many Fisherman are CHUMMING the waters around San Onofre and down around Point Loma?
Six foot? That barely qualifies as a shark! Cute, sweet little thing got lossed and misses it’s mommy. Serioulsy, I’m wondering if it was just born and getting it’s bearings. We had a little one wash up on the beach here. A couple of people rolled it into deeper water and it swam off I’m told. I’ve read they are born down south, feed on fish(tuna), grow a bunch, then move north to feed on the seals and sea lions. I worry more about stepping on stingrays( not you Ray) down south than sharks. You never know, though. Anything can happen. Part of the fun. Mike
I’ve tagged along a few times with my buddy that has a swordfishing boat. Uses a spotter plane and all that. Anyhow we have investigated more than a few great big Great Whites off of la Jolla over the past 5 years. I’m talking more than 16 fters. Were usually no closer than 4 miles off, and usually out about 5-10.
There’s a nice rookery of seals now, and it’s getting to be spring time. Remember one of the the first Great White shark attack in California was at La Jolla Cove in the 50’s…Robert Pamperin age 33. June 14th, 1959 Abalone diving. Never found, witnesses said he was swallowed whole by an estimates 20ft plus Great White.
We got some big gals around here too.
Brody, were gonna need a bigger boat.
One at La Jolla Cove bit a kayaker’s head and left a tooth in her face, ten years ago or so. That’s why they make the kayakers wear helmets
i remember reading about a paddleboard race that had a visit from a big white…
seems like it was just last year. nobody got hurt but there was definitely a commotion.
i know it happened somewhere down south (sorry, below Pismo is all kind of a blur to me).
i’m kinda with elewis… when i surf down south i feel really safe in regards to sharks.
they’re the last thing on my mind. but, the water is salty, sooo, anything is possible.
i wonder if this is a cyclical thing… i’d really like to believe they’re making some kind of a
comeback but that’s probably not likely.
I know the surfer that was bumped by the shark, this is someone who surfs Every Day Without Fail and is not prone to Making Up Stories To Get Attention. I heard the description of the head and shape of the shark… sounded very much like a GW to me, albeit a small one.
Chris,
This is the link to that article on paddleboard.com
Remind me to do all my surfing with Joey Everette…the man’s got brass ones.
