Kinetix Fast Hardener

I’ve seen one mention of Kinetix having a very fast hardener as well as the H125, by Feral Dave

I can’t find it on the ATL website?

Anyone have an info about it… does it still exist, is it good, how fast is it?

Thanks guys

I rang them about a fast hardener a few months back and they said they dont do one.

Its a shame because it’s great resin just too slow to set up in my opinion. But I am very impatient.

If I want something quick I use the FGI R180 with the fast hardener. Shithouse colour But good for filling holes and under paint, skins etc.

Daren.

Ok , bit of a hijack, but how long does it take to gel??. And also, can i use wax in styrene in it for hotcoats??. I’ve been looking at cheap marine epoxies, but when you buy the Non yellowing hardener, its almost the same price as double the amount fo kinetix, so im looking into both. But, i also want to use it for both lam and hotcoats, no point buying 2 lots of resin, seems silly.

Cheers

Hey thanks man.

Yeah thats a shame, oh well.

I like the kinetix so far

hey Mark,

The kinetix starts to get thick after about 1/2 hour.As you probably know epoxy doesn’t really gel like poly it gradually stiffens.

I did a filler coat on a board about two hours ago and its still quite wet, but it is only 16 degrees in my glassing area and a wet shitty day but when it gets a bit stiffer I’ll put it in the oven.

On a nice dry warm day flip time is only a couple of hours.

No need to buy two different types of resin just add styrene or xylene and wax to your filler coat. levels nice flows out well and no fish eyes.

Daren

Wow, for a kook like me that is perfect, i like to take it easy and do it right.

and a wet shitty day

Tell me about it. Got some really blown out shoulder high waves after what feels like forever. Was going to try my 6’10’’ again, but took the twin keel. It’s like a drug that thing, i just keep going back to it, and it always puts a smile on my dial, despite its flaws.

Just plain old wax in styrene? I have a tin of that already, just waitin to be used.

I’ve thought about epoxy a few times, and i always go back and forth in my head wether to try it or not. I guess you never never know if you never never go.

Thanks daren. If i do go ahead with the epoxy, i might drive down and bug you with some pretty boring questions before i do it??

Third paragraph down

The KINETIX® range includes resins of different viscosity, and a choice of hardeners with different cure rates. Each resin/hardener combination has its own unique handling characteristics, cure schedule and physical properties, and provides a wide variety of working times, viscosities and thixotropy.

I don’t know anything about the stuff, but it sounds like it’s available.

Hey Mark

The Kinetics is a really good epoxy to use. Gives you plenty of time to work.

I went down and saw Darren myself quite a while ago now and left with 4 times the knowledge I went there with.

Darren knows what he is talking about. Its his living.

He answered all my dumb question.

Bit of advice though. Try and keep the temp up where you work. You get a better chemical reaction.

I have a little blow heater that I keep on low when working. Keeps the room temp around 26 Degrees C.

Keep an eye out for gassing though.

Then I post cure after the lam and hot coat.

Turn the heater on high, close up my room and leave it for about 8 hours.

Room temp sits aroung 40 degrees C.

Cheers

Thanks mick, much appreciated. The colourbond shed in summer should be no prob’s with being on the warm side, as im sure you know!!. And, once done, i can just leave it there for a day. I’ve been wondering what temp, and how long for post cure. Did/dp you use wax in styrene etc for hotcoats??

Thanks everysurfer

Unfortunately i’m pretty sure that they are refering to the other resins in the kinetix range…

They are all 4:1 resins

The surfboard kinetix is a RR ripoff (probably), so it’s formulated completely different and won’t work with those hardeners.

I’m actually finding that it cures up nicely!

It’s only 18 deg C max today, and I just flipped the board after 3 hours.

It would be nice to have a super fast hardener for sealing wood and stuff like that

Hey Daren,

I’ve heard people say that xylene and parrafin is the way to go, but i’ve always been wary.

But you’ve been using it with the kinetix, and i’ve always respected your opinions in the posts i’ve read…

I think i’ll give it a try!

You say that wax-in-styrene works also? the styrene is fine in the epoxy then?

Otherwise, what kind of store sells the parrafin, and how do you tell its the right stuff?

Thanks guys, great info!
