So a few weeks ago i built something that i’m still not sure of what i’ve created…It began as a desire for a spoon type board, which transfered to my want for float, but keeping alot of flex and the hull bottom. I came up with a 5’6 x 22.5" greenough templated…thing. Ive ridden it in piddly onshore waves, but got some speed off the drop and felt the bottom turn a little bit, but what i found the most fun was coimng into a bowling closeout section in the pocket and coming up into the lip, how quickly the flextail redirected me to where i came from.
Here are some shape pictures as well as some flex pictures…for reference, im 6’2 and 215lbs:
Money shot gave me a start! What is the construction (too lazy to see if you posted it in the other thread)? Glassing schedule? Pretty impressive. What are the rails like in the tail? Think, I guess, but more than that I can’t tell. Looks like a fun little speed machine. I can’t get my head around what that much flex in the tail would feel like!
construction is stringerless PU foam, 8oz volan top and bottom w/6oz s + carbon hybrid on the tail patch underneath. there is a really thin layer of foam left in the tail instead of it being completley glass, i figured it would cut down on build time (i built the board in an afternoon for fun, it wasnt that serious of a project when i started).
the rails are pretty well non existant in the tail, in the flex part at least. The next version ill make will have foam coming down the rails, instead of a blob in the middle…so i can keep the rail shape. but i think having the non rail tail helps it release as quickly as it does off the top.
the rest of the board is a regular greenough style bottom, rolled with pinched rails though.
Got it. Very cool design. For version 2.0, you mentioned bringing the rials back. Are you thinking of bringing back the foam in the rails, but leaving the back edge of the tail thin still?
exactly that…i had it out again tonight and had some fun in cleaner waves, but i still need a better wave. the next version will be a shallower hull as well, but still dishy.
Youre welcome to give it a shot if you want, im up on the mesa if you ever want to check it out!
