hello everyone. I’ve been wanting a new high performance shortboard recently. my boards right now are kind of funky. I was thinking of getting a 5’8 pumpkin seed, but today I saw a 5’9 ksmall surftech at my local shop for only 450$ and i am seriously considering getting it. Can any of you help me out and tell me anything you might know about the ksmall such as how it performs, paddles, etc. pros? cons? to me it seems like it would paddle great because of the extra bit of width and thickness. also I am a big fan of diamond tails and like that a lot about it. I am 5’10 145 and i’m pretty sure this board would be perfect for me. any input at all helps a lot. thaks
Hi bigsam2,
I would buy it, I have got a 6’1"x 19 3/4" x 2 3/8" ksmall its a rounded square tail though. Its my all round go to board for anything from 3 foot to 8 foot surf. Its probably my favourite board i have owned, and I refuse to ride anything narrower than 19 inches wide, I like the extra stability and paddling speed too much!
wat up bigsam2, i have that exact board and love it. Has tons of float and excels on average days. only con i think of is it doesnt have too much flex but maybe thats just all surftechs.
I would not buy a surftech. buy a board from a local shaper. keep jobs here in the us, support the us surf industry, keep the traditional shaper/surfer relationship alive and save your dignity in the process.
I drop in on anyone riding a surftech…everytime.
me too Stvns!
i also drop in on anyone driving a foreign car!
or a car with foreign parts for that matter!
or a foreign built wetsuit or trunks! those guys deserve it!
and don't get caught wearing a t-shirt made outside the U.S.! you will get no waves if i'm in the water!
we should start a club all about burning people who don't do things exactly like we do. it would be great!
we could have a secret handshake and everything!
hey big sam
if 450 is the absolute max of your budget, then buy it, if not, i would save up 200 dollars more. With the 650 [not too much is it?] PM mike daniel of coil if he can do his thing for you, based on these dimensions. but that is only me, i am fully hooked on that coil thing!!
otherwise, the board sounds good enough for you, maybe even too big ? how apt are you at surfing?
wouter
I was kidding…but I still wouldn’t buy it.
Hey Wouter,
How much was the shipping on the coil to Europe ?
thanks everyone. as far as my surfing i guess i would say i’m an advanced surfer i’ve been surfing for about 5 years… and as far as the local shaper thing goes… i’ve bought my fair share of local shaper’s boards and i have one of my own. it’s a good board but all that i have to say is Al Merrick’s ride like no other board. and, I want an epoxy board I am very sick of all the pressure dings I keep getting in my fiberglass local motion. also, do you guys really think that a 5’9 would be too big for me? I know you are supposed to ride it a few inches shorter than normal but still it seems like the 5’9 would be perfect. my normal shorty is 5’10. i’m 5’10 145… also are there any fin set ups that yall would recommend?
Burnsie
the board was sways price
the shipping cheap
the taxes are bad
and you also pay the storage fees
all in all i paid for the first one around 800-850 euros
if you want one, you should pm me for more details on how and so…
i have two now! they are the best i have found in all my 15 years of surfing, and 15 years of making boards
ciao
Thanks Wouter it was an aspirational question really. The Government have cut our wages twice in the past year so I won’t be buying any boards soon.
Bigsam, I agree the ksmall is a lovely looking board with nice dims and I love my Merrick MBM. But I have had a few Surftechs and the first couple of rides are fun, then you start to find their limitations and lack of feel. Have someone do a PU board with epoxy for you or even better a compsand which will resolve your problems and still retain the connected feeling. or at least try a surftech in a range of conditions.
