Kwick Kick Resin ??

Just started using Kwick Kick epoxy resin and have been getting some blue/green tint in the laminate. I am mixing 2 to 1, I mix for 3 mins before applying, and I feel I do a very good job of scrappin the resin out of the lam. I just laminated a 6'10" x 30" SUP.

On the bottom I did 1 nose patch 4oz S cloth, a tail patch 6oz E cloth, and 1 full 7.5oz layer. was nice and clear from the tail patch up, except for in the rails. I used 18oz of resin, which I had about 2-3 oz extra.

On top I did 1 4oz S cloth deck patch, and 2 layers 7.5 oz E cloth. Really tried to get the resin spread out even quickly, but I ended up with some tinted stripes. oh yeah 18oz of resin, and I used it all.

I am using U.S. composites fiberglass

the reason for the heavy cloth is, because this board is going to be used to run rivers and river waves.

Just wondering if this is normal,if I am doing something wrong, if it was the cloth, or if anyone has had the similar problems.

hi tuf,

I don't do epoxy, but I might know what is wrong.

You said that you squeegeed excess resin off. Good. that would be my first guess.

Secondly, the 7.5 oz cloth you were using was probably VOLAN glass. It has a greenish tint to it. Cut laps are good to do for this cloth, even with a clear lam to make it asthetically pleasing.

Next time use SILANE cloth in 7.5 oz to achieve the non-tinted look you were going for.

GOOD LUCK!

I would generally agree with it being volan.  Even the silane at 7.5 can have a good bit of color.  The stripes I’ve also seen in fabric … has to do with the finish of the cloth.

I think I’m going to have to get some photos up. I know I dint purchase Volan fiberglass. The 7.5oz cloth has less tinting in it than the 6oz cloth I used on another board. The 7.5oz cloth tints mainly in the laps and had the stripes. It also had a very very slight tint where I had double cloth.

Going to try another board tomorrow. Going to try and stay light on the resin in the rails and try to get the resin spread out quicker

Hello Tuf ,

The more layers of cloth you use , the more cloud or hue or greenish color you will get. You will see it most on your overlaps. Thicker cloth will have more color. I'm not a Pro , I've never worked with Volan. Last summer I scored a really good deal on some S cloth. The S cloth is awesome but it has a slight greenish color. I think it looks cool!

You're glassing three layers of cloth using 7.5oz and S......your results are normal....The "problem" is not the resin.

Stingray

Thanks for the insight stingray. I was starting to think along the same lines. The first board I glassed turned out pretty clear, only tint in a tail patch and in the lap lines. I did that lam at around 65-70 degrees F. After that I realizd I could do that job quick enough to heat up the room so I did, that is when it really started tinting.

The S cloth I purchased from U.S. Composites is very clear. The7.5oz has a little tint, and the  6oz has the most tint. Kind of strange but thats how its looking.

I am going to keep to laminating at the cooler temps. The board I did at the cooler temp seems to have a bit more strength also, probally because it was more properly done.

Thanks again

Ha GregLoehr dint even notice that you had a comment. I called earlier, but guessing problem is solved. I am really enjoying the KK resin.

and one more thing......

Here in California we see "cut lap" lamminations all the time. I'm thinking that in your location you may not be exposed to old school longboards or new boards glassed to look old....aka Volan...

Cut laps are worth looking into.........I can do them but most of my stuff is free lap............

I started using Kwik Kick, and noticed the something similar. However, the board itself looks totally white, but the reflection of light onto another board looks greenish. Same color of the resin when mixed. Love the stuff so far.

wow, that is a very short SUP!!  Can you really standup paddle it?  Looks nice.

I have had some tinting issues on my past boards, like yours.  The board here is one I just finished.  I lammed with resin research (not the kwick kick), then hotcoated with kwick kick, then glossed with polyester.  The whites (lines and artwork / deck emblem) stayed perfectly white (sounds like an ad for laundry detergent LOL).

That’s a nice looking board you got there. I haven’t worked up the courage to try any pigments out. Was thinking about doing some lines over the hot coat. Need to read up on all that though.

Yeah I haven’t had this mini Sup in the water yet, but I the last one I built had real good float. I took more foam out the nose and tail, on this one, should still float fine. The paddle speeds arnt the best though lol. But I am a newb when it comes to SUPing

Sweet boards. I have a suggestion that helped me. The patches that are showing up on your board - are they under the main sheet of lam or on top. I found that putting the patch on top made it wet out clear but underneath had the same effect you are getting. Just my two cents. This could be the wrong way strength wise but it worked cosmetically for me.

Can I ask on the green and black board (very nice by the way) did you spray the foam with color? And did you use acrylic paint mixed with future to get a good bond? I haven’t worked up the courage to paint under the lam yet.

Much aloha,

Thanks for the input there chrisupp. I was going to use 4oz S cloth for a fin patch on this next board. To keep it nice a clear, but I might try your system out. Or at least on the next board thanks.
