L fins redux?

John, ummm, Walden Magic?

Mike, I bet they work the same. I think this development pints the (a) way forward maybe.

“pints?” Would ya be so good as ta pint me in the direction of a tappery?

I think it pints a way forward also. Should mention that my friend has been doing

some on other types of boards also with good feedback from the riders. The goal

is to reduce normal fin area(less drag, more speed) while keeping grip when turning.

btw, if you’re in the Brevard county area and want to get them professionally installed,

PM me and I’ll get you in touch with my friend. I think $50 is the going rate. He says it’s

more work than I think.

You swaylockers get busy out there. I’ll bet if you wanted to do it on the cheap you

could use sheet pvc for the blade. If you rough it up good, poly or epx will bond ok.

Mike

The Fat Penguin evolution redux?

That’s funny.

Skip Frye, Larry Gephardt, Mike Daniel, Alex Knost

= Fat Penguin guy

Yeah.

I’ll try to get a pic of a buddy’s board.

Hank Warner actually shapes these into his tails on fishes.

He definitely does not spin out on a 6’8".

Oh yeah, I was gonna bring that up.

I got a pic here…

Any ride reports or pics from anyone else? I’m going to get my friend

to put a set on my roundtail 4-fin and if we ever get any surf big enough

to get me off my fish I’ll check in on that one.

Mike

bump. any news or progress from anyone?

I still love my rail blades, my neighbor has moved on to adding the second set

ahead and a little up on the rail. I’m going to get him to add them to my fish when

we get a chance.

When we’re done with trick-or-treat I can expound.

Mike

I looked back over my other posts in this thread and there’s really not much I could add,

except that I’m still surprised that a bunch of fish loving DIY’ers like the sways crew haven’t

embraced this concept.

Lots of cool materials options open for doing small parts like this – wood? carbon fiber scraps?

Mike

Right up Chipfish’s alley.

In a manner of speaking.

Hope you have as much fun as we’re having.

Just finished putting a set on my Freddy fish.Test ride coming soon.Made them from 12 oz biax and glassed on with

single 6 oz both sides.Placed them 6.5" from the tips.

                                                                      Jeff

Hey Jeff,

Glad to hear you’re gonna give it a try. Don’t talk to your cousin up here before you ride 'em,

he’s ridden his and we don’t want him to color your thinking.

Don’t be afraid to cut them off and move them around, he-who-doesn’t-want-his-name-on-the-internet

did that a bunch when he first started on them.

Mike

Hi Mike

The theory makes so much sense.Had to try it.I have more fear of being among those

cold and timid souls that never never know victory or defeat.(Teddy R).

Parallel to the bottom?

Yes,parallel.Figured it was easiest place to start.

Found some more pics

Skip Frye representing…

More here - Fish Brotherhood.

Nuno gave me permission to show the pics.

There’s some some talk from Josh Hall about the ride in the comments section too.

Alexandro and Nuno, Thanks for the enjoyable blog guys.

Jeff should put up a ride report, I know he’s had some good times with his.

I’ve already given my 2 cents.

Hi Mike

I just returned from Europe to give my ride report! Being a heavy front footed surfer,I had to really nurse my

backside bottom turns on the fish.(6’2 Mike Daniel Freddy model twin/quad fin) I ate it alot.I attribute this to my ability

and exp.28 years surfing,20 years on logs.Mike suggested the rail blades so I tried them.BIG DIFFERENCE.I’ll still eat it

when I don’t roll the board on a rail first, then drive it.but the frequency is vastly diminished.I made mine like little rounded bonzer runners and glassed them on.The twinfin setup and rail blades give me alot of lift and hold.I was used to pushing around a log but have rarely picked one up since using this combo.

                                                                                      Jeff
