TB tests are extremely inexpensive…something to think about getting annually if spending time in the more crowded Indo areas/conditions.  Always better to know then not, and any positive tests are easily treated with very affordable oral meds, designed to kill any latent TB virus floating in your system…

40 years ago, a red haired local at one of the NorCal reefs I surfed had badly sun damaged lips with a permanent sore - suggested to him multiple times he get it checked out.  He’d just grin and say 'don’t want to know of it’s bad news."  towards the end of the year, he went to see a doc for ‘flu symptoms’, which were the inital effects of the metastasized melanoma which killed him shortly thereafter. Conversely, spent time in West Oz where more then a few of the older surfers out in the lineup had carved up lips and noses, still here to surf because they saw the skin doc in time…

Point being, always know the risks, otherwise you can’t manage them…

Apologies for ‘hijacking’ the thread, spent too many decades in health care, and saw too many folks have a bad ending because they just didn’t take off early enough…

How old was the NorCal dude who died of skin cancer?  You’ve made me parranoid about TB now, probably a good thing but!!

Reverb I guess if you call that photo 8ft my 5’10 is good to about 6ft then paddling becomes an issue and you get in late, once your on a solid wave on those boards they are fine and in the barrel its good, very responsive.

Reverb I don’t really know that much about surfboards, I’ve attempted to scale down my 5’10’‘s to 5’7’’ for someone shorter and lighter than me.  I’ve travelled a lot the last 10 years and I really think these smaller wider (not more than 19.5’’ for me but)  thicker boards are good to take on a trip for everything up to 6ft cause they are less likely to break. I only know PU/PE but I’ve seen every type of board break in all conditions and its sucks to be scratching around for a board when your at the end of the earth and the surf is pumping

I don’t know that much man, still working it out, thats why I come on this website. There’s another thread about rocker going on and I’m just agreeing that the little boards are valid and go really well in hollow waves.  6’4’‘s, 6’6’’ or 6’8’'s still have a place in the quiver but I’ve taken them on heaps of trips and never waxed them up.

What ever floats your boat Taylor, what ever you do don’t get the ferry haha!!

Have fun, yew!!

Ha!  Great to see this…

Yes, I know this is a surfboard design forum, but it’s not like some general info about a well known place is a secret, and we’ve had threads go far more afield from board design.

I am also stoked to the tangent towards health issues - that’s some real life stuff, as it the ferry thing…  Which I may have found intriguing 20 years ago… Ha!

As for the boards… Ha!  Apparently you aren’t putting “TaylorO” together, with my past board posts…  I’ll be taking my 7’6" “short board” eps, 2x6oz top and bottom w/6oz patches, and an 8’er with a heavier glass schedule…  Thick and wide too…  But me and my boards is separate issue… Ha!

From what I’m gathering there are a wide varity of places to choose from - my goal is to find a mellow, inexpensive set up.  It also sounds like If I have a plan for a place to stay for  week or so when I get there, then I can make adjustments once I’m there.

Funny mention of some of the pro’s shitty attitudes…    Reminds me of seeing MR at Huntington Beach shoulder hopping guys on a chest high day…  Part of my plan is to be there long enough with an appropriate attitude that I can manage to get some waves and have a good time.

Thanks again to all for “getting into it,”  certainly not close to being hijacked…  keep up the thoughts…
