Lam Question

Ok, I have an idea that probably isn’t all that original, but I couldn’t find anything in the archives about it. Just want to run this by everyone and see who’s tried it, if its a bad idea, etc.

Why not roll on a coat of epoxy directly on your blank and then lay your cloth on top of that, squeegeeing out any air bubbles? Wouldn’t this be a good way to reduce your amount of resin to near vac bagging levels, while ensuring an even resin coat and glass-to-foam bond all over the board? When it starts to gel do your hotcoat, to get that chemical bond and fill in the cloth.

I’ve seen this cheater “pre” coat recommended for carbon fiber and cloth inlay lams, why not for your standard fiberglass lam as well? I’m sure somebody’s tried this before, any comments?

Really hard to lay dry cloth over a wet blank, adjust the position and smooth out within a required time schedule.

Usually, a wet out blank is not enough resin, many dry spots need addressing, so easier to football size a center pour, and work out from there…takes me about 7 minutes to glass one board.

As far as superlightweight epoxy boards, sealing a blank can make easier and dryer laminates.

I have a 11 lbs 8’3" x 19.75 x 3.25 thick styro epoxy board downstairs.
