Laminating process....

I don’t know if this issue has covered before, but here it goes. When laminating the second layer of glass (on the top) can sanding resin be used instead of laminating resin ?? What are the advantages/disadvantages ?? Has anyone done this before ??

I was thinking of a way to save some weight. Good idea or bad idea … Thanks to all who reply…

bad idea, your hotcoat wont stick

you want to laminate with hot coat resin and sand directly after to save weight…

My opinion - not a good idea in general since the hot coat gives you something to sand into - a bit - before you hit the weave of the cloth. Laminating with sanding resin may give you a tack-free finish, but it won’t be thicker than the cloth so that you’ll be hitting weave almost right away in sanding. Better to deal with a few more ounces of weight and get a little more resin for the hotcoat. I’d think it might be too easy to sand too deep into, or right through the cloth this way also.

That said, If you use epoxy you can sand each layer if you’d like.

Surflab is right. Bad idea. If weight is your primary concern and your willing to sacrifice strength there are a whole host of things you can do. Start by doing away with the second layer on the deck. McDing

I always glass both deck layers at the same time with laminating resin…

Do NOT use sanding resin for laminating because of the reasons explained above by EricJ and Surflab…

If you want to save some weight I think is better to glass a deck patch instead of using the complete layer of glass…

Also using a thinner hotcoat can help a bit on saving some weight…

Or glass it with epoxy…
