Laminating rails advice

G’day Swaylockers,

been lurking for a while and now on to board no.2. Some friends gave me a hand with board 1 but I’m having a go on all aspects of the board myself this time.

Put the first laminating coat on  the underside today (PU blank, polyester resin). Even though not using a tint, I decided to go with a cut lap for neatness.

my question for the gurus … How do you wet down the hanging resin before you wrap under? On the first board I did the guys showing me folded the hanging section back up onto the flat surface after there was a good coat of resin on it. They then pat it down to soak it in resin and then fold over and then under.

I have seen it done professionally (YouTube) where the resin is simply waterfalled over the edge soaking the resin. It seems to be completely drenched and then when folding you shouldn’t get any dry spots. If this is the case is the standard resin mix ok or is there an additive you can apply.

appreciate the advice and have to say this board building is taking over my life, just can’t get enough. First board was a 9’2 longboard … The feeling of surfing a board you made yourself is something awesome.

thanks

Tozza

Sorry guys, the hanging section is obviously the fibreglass cloth, not the resin as I wrote a few times.

Both filmed by me. Glassing by bammbamm. Watch what he does and try to duplicate. You might be successful after a thousand or so. You are very welcome…

thanks, really helpful … And makes me feel better that it takes a few to get good!

Was the decal put between the two cloth layers? Do you try and re-use the gloves (clean with acetone) or just chuck em?

Tozza,

The logo goes down on the foam. It can go between layers but thats not standard.

I find that using disposable gloves works much better than those thick reusable ones when just doing 1 board or any color work. I will sometimes put on 5 or so pairs and just peel them off as I go. With those thick ones youll spend more on acetone to clean them then it costs to buy them if only doing 1 board.

If you are doing a big batch of clear boards those thick reusable ones work pretty good though. If you get pigment or tint on them dont try and use them on a clear board again.

Dont mix anything that was used for color work with anything you want to use for clear work when cleaning in acetone either.

Where are you located?

I watched the whole vid and thought it was very helpful. I noticed he poured resin around three times, is there a reason for it? I’m guess n - maybe for saturation?

Yup. I thought everyone knew that?

One of my favorite tricks. Nothing’s worse than realizing you have to put on clean gloves in the middle of a batch. Peel off one pair, good to go underneath.

Because good things come in threes.

Although, sometimes a pair can be good, too.

Thanks for the advice guys. Cut my lap this morning … a bit rough but for board no. 2 OK. Amazing what you learn doing it … the things I’ll do and not do next time.

WideAwake - Thanks for taking the time to reply. I’m in Brisbane, Aust.

…logotypes onto the foam ONLY when you have 1 layer like in the bottom; if not, between layers; like here BAMMBAMM SHOWED.
