I am in OZ and I charge $280AU for a glassed finished clear coated surfboard under 6'6. If he's is a beginner and it is his first sand job he will f##ck up your nice glass job in the sanding process. Then probably blame you when his board is not all it could be.
Only take off about $30 for the sanding. If you're finning the board, and setting the leash plug etc. dont rip yourself off.
A guy came in the other day and asked me about the exact same thing. wanted to bring me a shaped blank wanted me to glass it and he would set the fins and sand it etc. Told him it would cost $220.
With beginner shapers tell them exactly what they're going to get. I also explain to them that if the shape is not clean and the stringer is proud or if I have to do anything to the blank before I glass it the price will skyrocket.
Howzit surfmed,You have to remember that was many eons ago and on the best days I could make $240 a day and back then thatwent a long way and bought a lot of tacos. Aloha,Kokua
He is supplying all of the materials. Only thing I am supplying is skilled hand and eye
I told him up front what the range of prices where based on this thread ($150-180+) if he took it to a full on board manufacturer. He knows that at the price I gave him, he is getting a deal at the moment. Again…this is fine with me because I know what it’s like to start out and not have deep pockets. So part of it is charging him due to my time involved mixed in with giving this guy the opportunity to continue what he likes to do and being generous.
So be it then…he didnt have to agree to my price either. Look at it also that he is also paying me so he can learn something as well, as Im sure he will be over my shoulder watching me (I would be if I was in his position). Funny enough, one of the surf shops Im affiliated with asked if I was interested in being a lam guy for an actual manufacturer when I brought this whole thing up…wonder how much they pay ::

Same math I did to come up with a fair price to charge him (give or a take a few dollars for various material costs), and thats where I came up with just under $100.
