lap length

i was looking at the new Longboarder mag,the surfboard issue, and i noticed something…it is on page 61. it looks like the laps are almost wrapping onto the bottom instead of just off the curve of the rail. my ? is, should the laps go to the flatter part of the board, instead of the rail? how far do your laps go on the board?

My laps - and there have only been a few - have extended about 2-3" in from the edge of the rail - top and bottom. Sometimes that means it makes it to the flats… sometimes it’s really still in the radius of the rail. I think it depends alot on the board and the glass job wanted. Color, free lap, cutlap etc. the length of lap could vary .

Laps usually go a couple inches onto the bottom of the board. It’s an important strength feature.

i am trying to get rid of my wavey rails. i figured if i made the laps longer that they would be closer to the deck. any uneveness could get sanded flat with the deck when sanding the hotcoat.using a nice medium power pad could smooth those bumps out??? heh??
