Hi guys, haven’t posted in awhile, mainly because I moved from the happy surfing grounds of Hawaii to Memphis, TN. Yeah, not much surfing going on around here. Due to a change in my job situation, I suddenly have 2 weeks off and want to go surf somewhere. Would like to keep the trip under $3k, any suggestions? I’m tentatively leaning toward northern Peru, so if anybody has any recommendations for that area that would be good, too.
Puerto Rico can be reasonable, and you’re sure to get surf. Every time an arctic blast drops down the NE part of the states behind a big cold front, it brings strong NW winds to the great lakes and NE coast. For us here in New Jersey, that mean cold flatness. But those same winds, about 2 days later, bring overhead surf to PR, with tradewinds making perfect conditions for the West Coast around Rincon, which has plenty of reefs, points and beachbreaks to choose from. If you stay in the North Coast, you’ll get excellent, powerful surf, but the best conditions will be in the early morning, before the trades ramp up.
You can camp or stay in small, cheap hotels to save some bucks.
Flying to PR will really help keep you in budget. Or at least the flights from New York are relativly cheap. There will probably be surf there this weekend, here it is cold with steady northwest winds.
The dollar sucks against pretty much all foreign currency right now, so you may want to keep it domestic - your $3K will at least leave your wallet in a predictable manner. Nothing like going somewhere thinking you’re loaded and finding out that everything’s surprisingly expensive. Puts the beat-down on your vacation pretty quick. So I guess I’d vote for PR too, or maybe mainland Mex where the NP is basically indexed to the dolllar…
Or you may want to do a snowboard trip. Utah is pretty affordable, and you can get lodging/ski deals for less than a grand a week. Fly in & out on Southwest. Nice snow right now. And remember, they usually send Marines to hot places, not cold ones
If you want to change to snowboarding, give Grand Targhee in Wyoming a try. It’s a great place with unreal conditions and very few crowds. Steep, deep and cold…
