Latest progress on 6 foot six fishy swallowy taily thingy

Well, it’s been going rather slowly recently due to some “urgent” decorating about the house.

Carbon fibre’d the inside deck and stringer and ribs where they all meet and reinforced the inside of the bottom and stuck it all together with some cellotape and sticky backed plastic ala Blue Peter. Couple of shots attached.

Goodnight

Looking good Jase, what are planning on doing with the rails, can you post a piccie of the tail section.

clever stuff skinnyman !

…any idea what the nose rocker measures ?

I ask because the go I had on the mysterious Gray Murdoch’s wooden fishy thingy was a pearler …literally !!

ben

p.s. - and the tail rocker measurement too , if you could ? …cheers mate !

Hicksy,

will do a few more shots from side and back tomorrow. The rails are going to be good old cork tiles and ply again, can’t think of anything else lighter or pretty enough, balsa wood be nice but hey, this is England and I haven’t seen balsa since I was at school.

Have you given up on the hollow wooden thing for a while? I saw that moon rocket of yours, scary looking beast of a board, looks like it’s ready to bite yer leg off. Cool!

Cheers dude

Hey Benny-boy

can’t remember what the rocker dims are but I do remember that originally I had planned to make it 5 1/2" nose to 3" tail but decided after advise here from one or two better informed and learned individuals, to reduce the nose by at least an inch. If memory serves me well, which it doesn’t very often anymore, I reduced the nose rocker by about 1 3/4 and the tail by about an inch, though it looks more on all the pics; damned curly lense!

Where the hell is Mr Murdoch? Has he returned to his home land to avenge his fore father’s honour against the clan Mcleod? Or just busy?

Just glued up some wedges of timber ready for cutting into fins, nice grain patterns in the cherry and beech.

Any suggestions for fin shape and sizes for this ere fishy thing? You seem to know your onions when it comes to fin things…advice gladly accepted. Aesthetics are more important than performance to me as I’m totally crap at the old surfing thing. Any hows I’ll bid you G’day

Jase (MMM)

cheers Jason !

…I guess go with the 9" x 5" fish wood keels , if you’re wanting it to look ‘traditional’ .

…unless of course you want to experiment with different setups [eg: twin FIN instead of keels]…in which case , maybe a fin box or two or four ? [ or plugs. ]

ben

Whoooaah there Ben, how many? Not sure I have the option of plugs or fin boxes as I haven’t reinforced the inside for that kind of mallarky.

I’ve just foiled the first of a pair of 7 1/2" x 5" for creosote, what do you reckon something similar to these? They were going to be 8" but I messed up on the table saw and took a chunk out the thin end, not too shabby though!

I’ll send you a set for your collection when they’re all done. (glass-ons only I’m afraid)

Cheers bud

nice colour and wood , Jason …what was it you used for the lighter inlay ?

I’m sure 7 1/2 " base will be fine !

Yes , I’d LOVE a pair of those …thanks for the kind offer . [now I can mould the bases , I would probably [shock ! horror ! …reelaxxxx…]

fcs triple or quadruple tab them , so I could use them on the “prawn”.

I haven’t used wood keels in that board yet , mainly fibreglass ones …so , the lighter weight of wood will be nice !

no hurry on them though …

cheers mate

  ben

[just one thing , for your own …you might like to line the two fins up , and sand the trailing and leading edges to exacly the same size , just so they are symmetrical . Just an observation …hope ya don’t mind ]

It’s looking really good !

For balsa in the UK, you may want to try SLEC (http://www.slecuk.com/), if I remember well, last year

they had several 10 foot planks left from a special order for the movie industry.

I found back the Email they sent me (see copy below) :

Dear Pierre

I don’t know how many planks you need or how straight they need to be, but unfortunately the wood has a slight bow running the length, normally with shorter lengths we would machine the bow out, but being over 3000mm this is not possible. This wood is usually used in the film industry for special effects where a slight bow is not a problem.

The price per length machined to the following sizes

15mm x 100mm x 3000mm £19.14

15mm x 100mm x 2700mm £17.90

Ben

I’ll get on to it at the weekend.

The extra size on the none sanded is just for shaping. They are both done now bar a bit of finish sanding, and are near as damn it identicle in every dimension. I’ll post another pic when I get home.

The lighter wood is beech and the other curly grained stuff is cherry. The cherry is lovely to sand and feels really warm and soft to touch when it’s done. The wife’s starting to worry, I spent tooooo long stroking them last night.

I glued up another load of wedges last night and made myself a jig to hold them all together while the glue sets, should make it easier. I feel a production line occuring in my garage.

Catch you later

Cheers for that Pierre, I’ll start saving my hard earned ready for that project. How much do you reckon I’d need for an eight foot by 22" board? I think it’s gonna be some time before I get to this one!

Thanks again

wife …worry …too long …stroking …load of wedges…

hmmm…yes , I’m starting to worry to ol’ Jase … might be time to get out of the garage and get your hand off it for a while eh ?

benny banana purile ponderer

Ah yes indeed, with all this stroking of wood there’ll be no need for glue soon.

Here’s the latest pics of me wood thing, been a long time since I did anything worth taking pics of…all railed up and ready to glass…nearly. Still need a bit more sanding on them rails and a tail and nose block/wedge. It started off as a six foot six and has ended up being a full seven foot somehow, think my calculator needs new batteries. Any suggestions on best way to do tail block for this would be great, I’m struggling with this bit, I have some thoughts but might be a bit tricky.

Thanks.

…and a couple more for anyone who’s bothered.

Cheers all
