Lavz' Sunova Board Thread

ive got a incredibly durable one at 6 pounds with fins wax and grip

ive built one at 2.2 kg but it had issues

i reckon 2.5 to 2.7 kg all up can be hell strong and last for years(and i thrash the shit out of my boards)

any less and things get iffy on my boards (though i havent really got into advanced construction tech)

sabs is lighter then me by heaps and his are tough im told

a heavy composite is 3 kg so it must be built like a brick shithouse

or possibly have water intrusion

they might not turn you into taj

but they are deffinately higher performance

and a great leap for progressive surfing

once you adjust your style to suit!

i think the thicker stiffer fins would be making a big difference to your surfing

400$ hmm

ill make you a new one mates rates for 650nz

hi lavz, good to hear your impressions of your sunova,i have a 6ft 6in x 19 1/4 one which is 8 or 9 years old and still looks like new,

its such a nice board to surf ,looks good ,feels good, excellent durability ,i can/t think i would ever sell it even though i have been making my own copies,

my own sunova has the fins 13 inches up and toed quite away off the nose ,what fin placement has yours got, pete

here is a pic

I would love to have a sunova mal… I think thats where the compsand technology would really come in handy.

I agree completely! The bigger boards really seem to be able to take advantage of the the flex and lightness. However, many of the design aspects that make a compsand go makes the big boards look really strange. My current one looks like a mutant jellyfish.

hey pete

how do you find it goes in bigger surf

say ten foot faces

ive modified my mini gun into a similar plane shape as yours

and thought about putting the leading fins further forward

maybe 4 and 12.5

as I tend to stand further forward on longer boards

and find it hard to get them round tight in the pocket

hi paul, my sunova goes great in all size surf really, the biggest i have been out in is 6ft plus and it does go better in larger surf , the rocker is different to most boards as well ,flatish with a kick in the nose , i can/t feel the difference in the fin positions,i have a 6 ft 4 in pu board and they both feel very similar , pete

OK

Dak - I got your rail photos mate! GET EM WHILE THEY HOT!

John M - i got the rocker photos for you too…

Chip - the rear fin is located 3’ from the tail, and the sides are 11’ from tail.

Craftee - I had the same unrealistic notion that these boards would be majic and just somehow make you do backflips. After having ridden them, I don’t think there is a board like this in the world. I think surfing is very much to do with ability and technique. If you gave an amateur the best board available, and taj a shit board, taj would still smoke the amateur with technique and ability.

But as you say, the board has increased my surfing ability and is very durable… so what if it was in the hands of someone with greater skills, ie taj… and it improved his surfing ability ? thats taking the top and making it better? I think thats all you can really achieve…

Incidentally… the guy who I bought this board off had another board ordered, after 1 month when customer rang up, Bert said that he’d given it to Taj, and made this guy an exact replica. So this guy was surfing the exact same (as exact as it could be i guess) as Taj.

Anyways less talk with words, more talk with photos!

Ant

Rocker for John M.

The board’s bottom is totally flat, no vee’s or concaves or convex’s or whatever else you can imagine.

These are the relief cuts I’m talking about. I don’t know enough about compsands to debate it all… so I’m just showing the pics. but you’ll notice that there is another band of wood inside the main rail on the bottom… actually 2

More “rail cuts”…

Tail block…

Nose up close… not really sure about this, but there appears to be slits in the deck skin near the nose… maybe to accomodate the curvature?

Relief cut locations along the board measured in inches marked by the dots… notice they aren’t symmetrical or the same distances…

Finally - Newborn home made semi-gun, 1 year old thruster and compsand…

Notice how the 1 year old trhuster has heel dents like buggery, i checked the burger, and besides the depression of the front foot area… no dents whatsoever in 10+ years

Enjoy!

Ant

…thanks heaps for posting those Ant , very informative !!

I was surprised there was no concave in the bottom ? [In one of your earlier shots , it almost looked like there was a bit of double concave ? … but , it might just have been my crap eyesight , mind you !]]

Can we have a shot of the side fin ,

and the back fin , too, now , please ?

[is it possible to somehow measure how THICK the fin is , too, if it’s not too much trouble ?]

and the base and depth and rake measurements of them ? [are the sides and back fin the same template , I’m wondering ?]

cheers mate !

ben

okay , the last one …what are the dimensions of your semi gun ? is that YOURS , or for a mate ?

This is very informative, thank you!

On that photo, it might be the light, but it looks like the texture on the deck is different than on the rails. Does it come from a lap covering the rail from which we can see the limit? Is that a fiberglass band covering the rail (with a similar boundary on the bottom and on the deck) or the fiberglass from the bottom classically overlapping the deck?

Hi Ant!

Thanks soo much for those! Wow. I can’t believe Bert was doing things like this 10 years ago. It looks very simple, but who knows what lies under those skins. I learned alot just by looking at those shots. I agree with what you and Dave have said about “miracle” boards. Sometimes I hate being in the Line-up with my “fancy shmancy” compsand sucking like crazy while there’s this 14 year old girl on a busted up poly with a huge delam bubble on the bottom just ripping it up! Oh well…

Anyways, do you think you could post the thickness of the rail? I saw an old photo of a cross section of a sunova and Bert was using a 5/8 thick rail made up of 2x1/4 and 1x1/8 balsa. 'Just want to see if your board’s different. Thanks again Ant!

Cheers,

Rio

Hi Pierre,

I believe that the different texture or shade is caused when the deck is blended to the rails. It could also be accentuated by an additional strip of fiberglass.

Cheers,

Rio

HEY SILLY

TRY 4-12 WITH A FAIR BIT OF TOE IN.

MORE THAN STANDARD.

YOU’LL LOVE IT.

CHEERS

Truely in heaven today. Warm spring weather, blue skies, light warm easterlies… shoot me now and I’d be happy!

Waves were decent size, but no real shape unfortunately , we chose isolation rather than shape.

Got the sunova out again today…

Sequence caught on a digital camera and underwater housing! Brilliant

Happy days !

Ant

cheers mate

ben

I guess those shots confirm the suspicions of monocoque deck and non-mono bottom

Three layer balsa rails.

There are a lot of subtle details in there too.

Thanks for the shots!

assumption if you cant see whats under the bottom skin
