Laying fins and glass for richs t2s minnow

Im at the point where im ready to make the fins and lay them out on the board. I made richs t2s minnow template. How do I position them? How do you know where and what angle they should go?

Also, i found a local place that sells 6oz cloth for $5/yd and they have epoxy that is either 5:1 ($92) or 3:1 ($78) each for a gallon.

Which would be better?

Also should I use 4oz or 6oz?

Thanks!

Ian,

That’s a cool little fish.  If using keels I would line up the rear of the fin with the top of the butt crack.  Usually between 5.5 and 6.5 inches from the tips and line the fins up with the tips, usually about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 half inch off the rail. Double foil straight up and no toe in.  Single foil 1/4 inch toe in and about 4 degrees cant.  Those are  pretty standard fish numbers I think and I have had consistent results on my own fishes with the above numbers. Mike

Oh, check Thayercraft fiberglass cloth. They might have a better price than your quote. Free shipping.  Bargain bin, etc…  Cant help you much with the epoxy.  Most surfboard epoxies I m aware of are 2:1 ratio with uv protection to slow yellowing. I like the Composites epoxy from Rev Chem. Many around here like Resin Research.  I like it too.  Mike

Hi Ian,

We make our own surf specific epoxy in house that has optical brighters and UV stabilizers and ship globally. If it’s good enough for the guys on the North Shore then it should work everywhere else. We also have a large selection of cloths and other composite materials. We also offer low volume discounts. Check it out;

I used to use the line up with butt crack method - ususally around 6"…but over the past few years I’ve gone futher forward - usually between 6 3/4" to 7 1/4" from tail to trailing edge depending on size of board. This has worked well for me and the guys I’ve made them for. I set them about 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" in from the rail and tow in 1/8". I also set them with a 4 degree cant.

Purists may set them parallel to stringer with no toe in and no cant…I have made boards like that - very very fast but turning is compromised.

Cheers

Rich

thanks everyone for the input ! I just finished doing the sealer coat on it… looks sweet,. then going to take your advice in to account and do the fins!

Are you a Hoarder?

I have lots of problems myself. Clean up all that junk....make a run to the Goodwill. If you network with Sway's Brothers you can score some really good deals....like cloth for much less than $6.00 a yard and RR for a good price.....

....for fin placement on a fish.......Rooster is the man......Stingray

Hi Ian-

Nice looking board!  What the construction you used on that?  Is it a kit, hollow board???  What kind of wood is that, White Cedar?

Brad

Hahahahahah! I hate that it’s so messy! We just moved into my wifes gfs house who still has alot of bachelorette belongings in garage. Oh how i long for space. Working on this helps me stay sane its like therapy! I must do more networking on here! Ill have to say ‘talking’ to Bing Copeland on here one day just about made my life complete! So many legends here on this forum and so much wisdom! Im ever thankful!

Brad; thank you! Im like a proud papa with this board! Its richs minnow template from t2s forum. I did 1/4in Cedar oplank over frame all hollow. I’d like to use better quality lumber next time but was able to rip home depot cedar down to size on the table saw. Still lots to learn but im all ears! So proud to see it manifest!

ps stingray, just cleaned the garage best i could …whewf…AND best part, my land lady said i can take all her stuff to goodwill~!YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
