Learning from your mistakes

Had a minor disaster last night! Came into my shack this morning to find small crumbs of filler in my hotcoat. Aaargghhhh! Anyhow it’s not the worst disaster i’ve had by far & i’m sure there will be many others for me. Through my own carelessness or just an unfortunate incident! I have a bunk/store above my glassing room & stupidly was up there rooting around for a spare extractor hose after hotcoating, which obviously caused this. sod’s law i suppose! everyone else must have a story about being stoked with a board when they turn the lights out, to come back to a less than pleasing result & also a valuable lesson learned. Let’s hear some of them… They say you learn more from your mistakes/bad boards than better ones, if that is the case i should have learned more. Slanj

Can only load one pic at a time!!

the only pic of deck beforehand.

Not a big deal, anyway. Hotcoats are meant to be sanded, right?

The cat is out of the bag…Slanj’s super secret traction recipe! Nice board, I hope it sands up nicely. -J

this isn’t one of the many many surfboard Oh shit moments but one from when I was painting yachts. We were painting a 52 foot custom built sail yacht in San Marcos CA. At that time there were still lots of farms in the area.  We prepped the hull to shoot the final
coats of Awl Grip LPU paint. Paint was about $150 a gallon with catalyst reducers and all. We had a bright clear morning the air was still and looked like the perfect day. loaded the gun and made 2 beautiful passes. Allow some time for the paint to firm up and started my last pass. I just finished the port side and was 1/4 of the way down the starboard side when a slight wind picked up. Should have been no big deal except for the cows that came close to the fence near where we were working and the flies that came with the cows. The smell of the LPU paint attracts bugs and those flies decided they liked the paint more then the Cows. I finished the my last coat looked back at the Hull and it looked like it had grown a beard. literally 1000s of flies were stuck to the paint and more were on their way. It was all on the starboard side as the port side was already firm and they didn’t stick to that side of the hull.
scraping and sanding dead flies off a hull is an interesting experience.

Like i said it’s not a huge deal, but could have done without it. It’s left little white marks on sanded hotcoat! Thanks Jrandy that’ll be the company/product name - “Slanj’s super secret traction recipe” Haaaa, it’ll make me a fortune!! Brilliant Artz " Looks like it had grown a beard " Lmao! Done a fair few coats of anti foul etc on yacht hulls myself, fly’s would make a change fae barnacles, limpets etc i suppose?! Thanks for sharing! Slanj.
