leash loop - anyone ever go wide and on the tail?

Hey sway's

Going to do my first glass on leash loop and was thinking about putting it on the tail of the deck where it rolls to the bottom.  Also thinking about making it wide and low.  Wide enough so that the velcro/web railsaver will fit without the nylon cord.  Anyone done this before - good idea / bad idea.  I tried searching but couldnt find anyone placing the loop on or near the tail of the board.

Does it make sense to offset it from center - say regular foot, put it out towards the right side rail corner.

The board is a wide/square tail mini simmons type shape that was ressurected from a broken longboard dumpster dive.  Its about 5'4" and the tail is 16.5" wide and about 1" thick.  Built it so my daughter can do some artwork on the bottom - but Im sure it will get surfed once or twice just to see how it goes...(before being returned to the wall).

Thanks to everyone in advance for the help,

yoyo

Did this on my 6’3" with a squash tail.  Works great.  Not totally on the tail, but no rope required.  Just slide the velcro bit under and good to go.

Pompano,

Thanks - Nice board.

It looks like you used some carbon fiber tow along with the glass rope.  Nice touch.

the only problem that I’ve had with loops that run perpendicular to the stringerline is that unless they are really low and appropriately rounded, they can be a hazard for toes, heels and feet in general in certain situations.

also, as you make your loops low, they have a tendency to become flat as well, leaving you potentially sharp edges along the sides…these can also cut and gouge, not just you, but your cords and straps as well.

Just cut a piece of 150 grit small enough to fit through the loop and about 4" long. Slide it through, grab both ends, pull up using a sawing motion and it will get rid of those pesky edges in no time. I’ve done it with both epoxy and pe and had great results. When done, put a light sealer coat of resin over it and Voila!

For my first leash loop I think it turned out pretty good.  Sorry I cant take pictures - Im away for work during the next few weeks.

6 strips of fin rope layed over 2 pencils side by side covered in clear shipping tape.  Width is really good and a shortboard leash velcro fits nicely.  If I could change anything I would make it just a little bit lower to the deck - something not as tall as a pencil.

Srpato - The strip of sandpaper inderneath is a great idea.  I used some sandpaper wrapped around the end of a metal tweezer handle and just worked it back and forth. That reminds me - I have some coarse emery cloth that should be great to smoothing the underneath corners.

Thanks for everyone's help,
