Leash loop before/after gloss coat?

I am going to try glassing a leash loop and was wondering when it is best to attach. I have already pinlined the board and don’t want to have any accidents, so I was thinking on glossing first. Then sanding with 100 grit in the area of the loop before attaching. Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks! -matt

Leash loop best to go on before hot coat. Lam resin to lam resin, cloth to cloth. Then hot coat, sand it smooth, pin line, gloss and polish. Best when you got that open weave to stick the glass fibers too.

But you did it after the hotcoat. You really want to make sure the cloth is bonded to cloth. Nothing worse that feeling the tugging on your leash, only to feel that release of something giving. You look around for your board and all you find is the end of your leash with a little glass loop attached. So in your case, sand the hell out of the area where you are putting the loop, use something like 50 grit to give the cloth something to bind too. Don’t worry too much about scratches, the gloss will fill that up.

uhhh, best bet is to NOT gloss it first.

Sand the area with 36 grit or 50 grit. Really scratch the hell out of it. You will not have any strength issue whatsover if done correctly when applying after hotcoating if you do this.

Archives have several great threads on the ins and outs of the leash loop.

JAy & Drew,

Thanks for the info !

i do mine on sanded hotcoat as to avoid doing damage to fiberglass, the loop is bonded to resin not the weave of the lam,so it pops off leaving the lam behind…easyer repair…my 2 cents my opinion

i don’t really understand the above post… easier repair??? the only reason you would need to repair it is if it popped off, but it will never pop off if you do it before the hotcoat??? you’ll never have to touch it if you do it before the hotcoat a few mins after you lam has kicked… after hot coat is basically just glueing something on…

Hey Matt,

If you want to protect your pinlining, try taping it off so you don’t accidentally sand it. Some might come off if it’s a posca pen you used but you can easily fix it. HTH.
