Leash Loops Online?

Hey,

Is there a place online that sells leash loops?

Even somewhere that sells different colors?

Thanks

Rick.

No leash loops. (Or leash string.)

Leash Loops are easily made from 1/8 inch braided nylon. Black, or white, is most common. Other colors can be obtained at places like Sports Chalet, or anyplace that has a rock climbing department. They will have a variety of colors available.

Thanks Bill.

I’ll check REI or EMS.

Rick.

Shoestrings work too. Almost all of my shoes have strings that have been cut off at the ends. But if the waves are of consequence use two strings just in case.

Ha. I’ve been using shoe strings too. But ran out of old shoes. Figured I might try the real thing.

i make my leash loops out of string purchased at west marine. about 1/8" or so. i think it costs about 50 cents per foot.

cut it, burn the ends and you have all the leash string you ever wanted.

Perfect.

Thanks.

sorry, I misunderstood.

Hey Rick,

We have braided hemp leash loops. I’ll throw one in with your shipment to check out. Super strong!

Sidenote: Hemp was a common marine rope on early US Navy and merchant ships back in the day. Pirates loved to use it too  Arrrrrrr.

Thanks Brian.

My experience of hemp rope is that if left wet and airless (boardbag) it rots really quickly. I’m talking old boats, maybe the new stuff is better.

Hey Rikds,

I have a wet hemp leash loop right here straight from a good session. I’ll throw it in a ziplock bag and observe if it rots. I’ll report back here in a few weeks.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I’ve resorted to zip ties before in a hurry…but anything will work. No need to go to a specialty store (REI) to get something you could get at you’re local hardware store or grocery store.

thats funny, i will remmber it, but i guess it will if not impregnated.

If you use nylon or acrylic rope, use a match to slightly melt the knot so it doesn’t come apart. If you use hemp or some other organic fiber, use a dollop of water resistant construction adhesive in the knot so it doesn’t come apart.

I learned the hard way a few years ago that you want to make your loop as small as possible. I used a shoe string in desperation once, and made the loop so that it just barely hung over the tail (rounded pin). A wipeout on a big wave at San Miguel caused that shoe string to rip straight through the fiberglass on my board. I now take special care to make sure that the loop doesn’t even come close to the edge.
