I have about 2 1/2 quarts of Resin Research epoxy, 1 1/2 quarts of hardner and a lot of Additive F. Think that will be enough to glass(at least laminate and hotcoat) a 9’6" with a single 6oz. layer on the bottom and a double 6oz. layer on top?? I will be adding color as well…Not sure if I should buy some more or not…
You should be able to do that entire board with 1 gallon of epoxy, with a lot left over...But if this is your first attempt at epoxy, folks tend to mix up too much epoxy to get the job done...so you waste a bunch. Plus doing color you have to mix up a bit too much, because if you run out, you cant mix the color perfect.
So I guess you have to ask yourself...do you feel lucky punk...well do ya?
I'd give it a go...but not my board.
You never fail to amuse/frustrate me…
Ok, I’m game. Are you saying I should be able to lam, hot coat and maybe gloss with that amount, or just lam?
at least through hot coating both sides. Gloss too if you are careful and mix tight.
You can lam and hot coat…as long as you don’t waste any. You might even be able to do the fin too. But you are waisting your time using it to gloss. Epoxy as a gloss sucks. Get it perfect, and spray it with a LP two pack, or something else shiney. Then polish out.
But you seem to be asking un answerable questions. It all depends on your epoxy waste? Not bragging or nothing, but 1 gallon of epoxy will make a bunch of boards, but then I’m a tight ass when it comes to epoxy…and my boards come out too light? So light people ask me what I do differently? I just tell them that epoxy is just glue for the fiberglass…remember that…it’s just glue. Nothing structural, just glue. The less you use, the lighter the finished product. Not enough, and it will fall apart.

you may consider doing it it stages keep it clear and go with 1 qt at a time
do the center first then mix another smaller batch to finish the rails.
you got 3 and 1/4 qts total epoxy
and a 9 fter,,,, wow! you will be cutting it close to do a hot coat also
I know a pro could pull it off
I, myself , am a little (have to be) wastefull when I do colors, so when I do clear I can do it in sections, not waseting the precious.
Thanks for the help. Just got done laminating the bottom. Came out tight, but not too uniform. My problem is when I pour all the resin on, I can’t seem to spready it evenly enough with tose small squeegees, so it it is a bit lighter and darker in areas…Oh well, live and learn.
soooo,,,,, you used tint?
Yup, going with a full tint, cutlaps on both sides. Going to do the tail and nose grey, but can’t decide whether to paint colored resin over the lam or hotcoat…
when you do a tint ,, to get it nice and even you have to push the resin around over and over to get it even.
just once over will give splotchy results.
I will do two floods to make shur its even
with this you will have waste
how much resin did you use to do the first lam?
Thanks for the advice(for the next one)…You don’t even want to know how much resin I used for the bottom…Waaaaay too much, and still ended up kinda splotchy.
Epoxy tint.....................
you didn't say that was the plan...did you?
epoxy tint with limited epoxy? i thought you were going to spray the board, and then do clear?
There's a reason why you don't see good epoxy tints. There is a good reason why you don't see good vibrant epoxy swirls. There's a reason why most epoxy boards with color work is in big geometric patterns. And there is a reason why PU goes with PE.
In the words of Mr. Jim Phillips. If you want a high performance board get it in EPs and epoxy.....clear epoxy. if you want an Easter egg, get it in poly.
Epoxy soaks in by gravity..you can't force it, it does not saturate like poly. Therefore the wet out timing and way you pour it out is way different than Poly resin. Poly resin is like water, you can force it into the cloth and soaks a lot faster than epoxy...Like 5 times faster.
Plastic spreaders pull resin around harder and leave less. There many epoxy tricks...more than poly that need to be discussed to get a semi decent tint job. They are two completely different animals when laminating. Guys get into trouble, work too fast, use too much material when they treat epoxy like poly.
were alway's here for you scott. XXOO's
Tenover
you asked if you would have enough resin,,,,
you got some opinions,,,
you were asked how much you used and your answer was,,, "you dont want to know",,,
thats not fare,,
we are trying to help you ,,,
help us help you
and some pics please
I’ll post pics once it’s in a better stage, I promise. As for resin amounts, I won’t lie…I ALWAYS mix up too much resin when doing a tint because I’m paranoid of running out. For this 9’6" with a full solid tint, with laps that wrap around about 2", I mixed up 32oz. of RR for the deck (double 6oz. glass) and mixed up 28oz. for the bottom (single 6oz. layer). Ended up with some excess, but I’m fine with that. Thanks for all your help.
double 6 on the bottom and single 6 on the deck???????
you got it backwards its double on the deck single on the bottom
or have I been making mine backwards??????
My bad…Yes, single on bottom, double on deck…LOL. I know better than that. I edited/fixed my post…Thanks.
I just can’t bring myslef to do swirls…Not a fan. I like solid tints…Whole board, with cutlaps. At this point, I have a full board tint with cutlaps, but I want to paint/wrap the nose and tail with a gray color. If I spray paint over the lam coat, will the RR epoxy hotcoat stick ok??(see my other thread)…Thanks.
