lesson learned... explanation pending

Board two complete, thanks to all for advise… Rob Brown, your lap advice was very effective - glassing was almost… enjoyable. No strings (well, maybe three) quick and easy. My first cut lap experience; dug into the right side (first side) with the blade a little bit, didn’t even graze the left - seems a technique of pulling the tape and lap to the razor blade, instead of vice versa. Definatley use that again. The whole board weighs about half of my first. Made some cosmetic errors, but I learned from it. One major boo boo. I had an air bubble on the nose that kept comming back (I think there was a piece of gummy resin there from my lap). I lost patience trying to hold it while it kicked, so I grabbed a hairdrier (whoops) and zapped it. Air bubble gone, ugly yellow stain… I’ll see it on every wave I paddle into. So I spent an entire night being pissy about it, and I’m pretty sure I’m over it. Won’t use a blowdrier anymore. But I’m curious, what yellowed? The resin or the foam? Cheers,

But I’m curious, what yellowed? > The resin or the foam?>>> Cheers, Most of the time it’s Acetone… “Never get Acetone on Foam” it looks as if you pissed on it bad move!!! You need to make a rail Marking/Cutting tool?? and you get perfect rail cuts everytime… Nose and tails are a trick but if you take some time and fold your cloth under as you are preping to make good even folds. When is number 3?? It’s like i tell someone who wants to learn You make ten of the same board each one get’s better. After 10 things all come together… Off to work… Rob

Your yellow spot was most likely caused from heating the resin with a hair dryer. As you know the reaction of resin and catalyst generates heat. Too much heat and you get yellowing. Whether it is from too much catalyst, additional heat sources (heat lamps - UV - etc. - Heat from friction, ie. - when sanding a board you can sit in a spot too long at too high of a RPM). More than likely your yellowing is in the cloth/resin not the foam. When I get an air bubble that won’t go away, I take a razor and make a cut about half way around the edge of the bubble, then take the razor and pull it across the bubble like a squeege. It should then lay flat (the earlier you get to it the better your chances are). Once it kicks you might have a little raised area where the cut is, but this is easily removed with a file, etc. and you won’t see it when you hot coat over it. Good luck.

You need to make a rail Marking/Cutting tool?? and you get perfect rail > cuts everytime… Yea, but can you use the tool without scoring the blank? …or do you need to do pinlines everytime. I intend on learning pins on the next one (cause I’m doing a bigger board) but I don’t care for pins on my smaller sticks.>>> When is number 3?? I think the roomates are getting a little sick of me shaping and sanding in the front yard and glassin in the garage (home of the Mustang). I’m in desparate need of my own Tiki shack in the backyard with a nice shaping rack (don’t get me wrong, the ol’ ironing board has been doing a fine job)… ah I dream of the day. That being said, the roomies will probally go home for Christmas… I’m thinking something around 8ft. [smile] I think I have the feva Cheers,

Good luck on three…

Rook if your just doing clear free lap… If you do Volan, color some old > school you use a blue pencil it dosn’t show on the foam when the board is > glassed???>>> Good luck on three… Ahhh blue pencil, just like the ole offset printing days in graphic arts. That’s a lot simplier, yet not as cool (to a gadget junkie) as my invisible UV marking pens. Thanks…

hey man sometimes when you do a ding repair and you kinda cook the resin it can turn a yellowish color and when you do it, it singes the foam, kinda like touching it with a lighter for a split second. theres your yellow man. it just got too hot. austin http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards
