have you heard this for stupid! here in Ireland the stupid government is trying to bring in a law to make all water users including surfers wear a lifejacket/bouyancy aid. and persons caught without one will be fined!
what, are they supposed to come paddling up and write a ticket? the govt. should be worrying about more important things, good luck
have you heard this for stupid! here in Ireland the stupid government is > trying to bring in a law to make all water users including surfers wear a > lifejacket/bouyancy aid. and persons caught without one will be fined! Here is a logical argument aginst lifejackts in the surf. You can’t duck dive under a wave & you would be dragged to you death on the rocky shores of Ire!!! Thats just what you need when paddling out in crunchy consistant surf, some added boyancy to keep you in the impact zone until your compeatly exhausted. I would try voicing reason first. second, how bad could the ticket be???

yeah there is a big campaign on at the moment from all surfers. but it seems like they arent listening at all and dont care what we think! fines are in the region of €60!

If so then what about divers ? Have I seen Laird Hamilton wearing some kind of vest on his adventures??? Sounds crazy though Paul. How will they catch you though, surely they don’t have Life jacket inspectors???.. Take it easy Peaman
divers wear a bouyancy system already. their vest that holds the tank inflates. http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards
This is classic cradle to grave euro socialism at its best. Gun control, the euro money, the dole, the fin on your new board is to sharp, are you wearing a helmut?! is your wet suit warm enough!!! is that wax on that board BIODEGRADABLE!!! …oh sorry got carried away. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

I realise that there are a lot of well intentioned people who would like to see safer water but surfing is an unusual sport about which there is a lot of misunderstanding. On this website we support any measure that would make the sport safer and more enjoyable; however, this idea is not one of them. 1.Wearing a lifejacket will impede the surfer’s ability to paddle a board, making it harder to get out of the impact zone where beginners in particular get caught. 2.Wearing a lifejacket will make it harder to ‘duck dive’ a wave again causing the wearer to be caught in the impact zone. 3.The additional cost of lifejackets would certainly damage, if not cause schools to close down. Surf schools are strictly regulated by the ISA and Irish Water Safety Council. Having less of them or increasing the cost of them would deny a lot of young surfers a good grounding in the sport which includes water safety lessons. 4.Wearing a lifejacket or flotation device would impede a surfers ability to manoeuvre on the face of the wave, and increase the likelihood that they would ‘wipe out’, or fall off, at the point of the waves maximum impact. 5.A surfboard in itself is a flotation device that if the worst came to the worst the surfer would have it as a safety device. 6.I cannot comment on other wave sports but certainly body boarders and knee boarders would be opposed to this move. Surfing is a different sport to most others, and there are ways to make it safer. The introduction of lifejackets or flotation devices is actually a step backwards. For instance, to make things safer there are certain things that could help. 1.The provision of free swell charts by Met Eireann would help people decide where the best suitable location to practice the sport was. 2.To ensure that people starting out can swim at a level that is suitable. If you do end up having to wear one check out the Fusion model by palm spraywear. Its made of a nylon/neoprene mixture, for body-hugging feel that won’t slow you down. I think it is simalar to the one Laird wears when he is riding huge mountains of water. www.sierratradingpost.com under pfd’s. Otherwise stick to the man and ride without one!! Stay solid D
