Lis style kneeboard vs. stand-up fish...differences?

I just got back from PR where I was extremely pleased with the way one of Manuel’s canard quad fishes worked in good-sized surf. On a few sessions, I experimented and rode it as a kneeboard with swim fins. What a blast, I rode it at a super shallow fast breaking reef and was able to get super deep. However, I know there are differences, maybe fin placement?

  1. Is the famous 5’6 or whatever template that’s been posted here for a Lis kneeboard or stand-up?

  2. Dumb quation, but does Steve still shape twin keel kneeboard fishes? wait time a year or more?

  3. Does Pavel or Manny shape them? (Manny, I’ve been meaning to send you an email for about 6 months now about my boards)

  4. I know there are moderen kneeboards, but for what I want out of it, I’d like to go with the original Lis design. I’m 150-155 and 5’11…what size board?

Thank you.

lis still makes them and so does pavel. i know a guy who just got a new lis and boy does it look sweet.

Hey,

As far as I know, Pavel is doing plenty of fish now… If you’re in/near SD, stop by his shop (the Greenroom) in O.B… He’s got some new fish with insane glass—by the way, if anyone knows where he’s getting his glass done, let me know. The girl in the Greenroom just said “North County” and didn’t know anything else.

The Greenroom generally has a Lis or two in stock and they know how to get in touch with him.

Howzit trucker, Steve is listed in the Kauai phone book so it’s not that hard to find him.Aloha,Kokua

I believe those are being glassed by moonlight glassing, they are in North County.

Howzit billyp, Yep Steve has them glassed at Moonlight, but from what he tells me when it comes to his 5 finners they put the boards on the side til they are slow since the 5 fin set up is a drag to sand.Aloha,Kokua

I am really curious about the answer to question #1. The book “Surfboard Design and Construction” says the 5’5" plan is for a keeboard. It mentions that Lis made some fish surfboards, but is not clear at all about what (if any) changes were made to the design to make it into a surfboard.

From what I’ve seen, standups are thicker, and more fin area, template the same.

Trucker,

My Pavel boards are glassed at Moonlight. Saw him there today, in fact.

I’m pretty sure he uses a couple glassers, though.

Kokua,

Who glasses Steve’s boards on Kauai? Was wondering who might have glassed mine. Thanks…

My Lis was glassed at Diamond last aug. and is light and strong ( really excellent glass work!!).My Rich pavel’s were glassed at Channin’s and are great also.Rich told me on kneeboard’s the difference is the rails. The blue boards in the photo were done by Clyde Beatty with S -glass and I think will last for eternity!!

I think maybe kneelo fins a little farther (further?) forward than foot boards and ideally rocker distribution may be adjusted to match??? At least in modern versions. Not certain but think so?
