I just saw this surf flick and thought it was pretty interesting. A segment on Derek Hynd shows him riding a quiver of boards that range from a 5’8" Lis Fish to a huge rhino chaser with twin leash plugs. Other parts that stuck out for me were a profile on Wayne Lynch and Tom Curren ripping on a single-fin shortboard.

Riding all those different boards out at J-Bay. That segue on one of Terry Fitzgerald’s son somewhere in the British Isles was rather interesting too. If you’re into Wayne Lynch, check out “Sea of Joy”.
Aloha DT, I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy of “Sea of Joy,” but I haven’t been able to find a shop that carries it here in Hawaii. Do you know of anyone selling this video? Possibly mail order? I heard that Wayne Lynch is selling it on his website but I was hoping to find a copy here on Oahu and save on the shipping. Have you seen “Evolution”? I’ve heard mixed reviews on it. I read somewhere that it’s a little hard to watch. Wondering how it compares to “Sea of Joy.”>>> I especially liked the Derek Hynd segment myself. Wondering how it compares > to “Sea of Joy.” Hi, I’d recommend you order (like I did) “Sea of Joy” thru one of Wayne Lynch’s dealers. I ordered mine thru Mitch’s La Jolla (their address and phone is on the Wayne Lynch site). I saved about $15. They charge less for the video and shipping costs. I tried dubbing it, but it’s been copy guarded so the quality of a recording is very poor. I have the “Evolution” video and yes its a rather crude, choppy film, a little out of focus at times, but a great time capsule of the period. It really brought me back to the excitement of seeing Wayne and Nat’s radical surfing for the first time. Also interesting is the '68 World Contest in Puerto Rico. Quite a melting pot of the different attitudes of the time. I’ve been watching “Sea of Joy” a lot since I got it. It’s a lot more focused and features a bit more variety of spots compared to Evo. It starts with Australia, '70 World Contest (Rolf and Reno rip), J-Bay, Mauritius and finishs off with some Kauai and North Shore. My favorite part is the Mauritius segment. Seems like theres only Wayne Lynch and Ted Spencer out at Tamarin Bay in perfect 3-6 ft. lefts. Waynes surfing appears rather advanced for the time. If you’d like to discuss this further drop me an email. DT
Hey, Thanks for all the info on the videos. The prices did seem a little high on Wayne Lynch’s website. It sounds like “Sea of Joy” would be a better choice for me. I’ll check out Mitch’s. What’s your e-mail? I’d love to chat about videos, boards, fins, etc.
