This is the board that my dad and I designed, and i’m thinking of shaping.
Does this look right?
Thanks, Ellizabeth

OOPS! I forgot the nose and tail widths.
Here it is with those dimensions.
These dimensions are at 12" fwd and aft.
Nice looking outline. Use those same measurements but reverse the nose and tail.
She wants more of a “performance” type ride out of this board. Will flipping the nose to tail and vice versa produce a short board type ride? Also thinking of a single fin. What do ya think?
Single yes and it will be more snappy.
The reverse tear drop outline as pictured looks really nice to me. It could be an ultimate small wave carver. With side bite plugs and a small center box, you could have a blast fine tuning the fin(s) in different conditions.
Nice looking!
Go single or you could go 2+1.
good work!
Josh.

When you say reverse tear drop do you mean with the narrower nose as pictured or flip it around like solosurfer suggests?
Wide tail, narrow nose. Guys used to ride that type of shape at Malibu and some of them ripped. A big single flex fin mounted forward was the call back then but I’d think a set of side bite plugs and center box would offer plenty of room for fine tuning on her’s. If you would like a basic flowery stencil I cut out for air brush, send me a PM and I’ll send you one.
for shortboard style surfing theres nothing better then a shortboard. but for an egg id go a little shorter and a little wider all around. 5’10" x 17" x 20" x 17". coupled with four fins and a single concave youd get an easy to paddle, loose and skatey board that could handle all types of conditions. allot like hicksys wooden board. i did see some guys tearing it up on mccoy nuggets around here one morning though
Hey Dave, Howzit?
She’s gonna be using the board right here in Newport mostly. Is the board you talkin’ about good for Newport?
You When you say 17" nose and tail I can see the benefit to paddling but how will that affect overall performance?
Also she’s not a strong paddler yet, do you think the shorter length will suffice for floatation? I think she weighs…she’s gonna kill me…About 120 lbs. and is about 5’7".
Your outline is quite unique in that it could be used either way. The narrower nose/wider tail as pictured I think would be more of a tail rider, if it was flipped with the wider nose/narrower tail, to be ridden more forward. For my tastes I’d prefer the wider nose/narrow tail option, but that’s just my opinon. Whatever the case, I think it looks like great plans for what will hopefully be a great board for you.
the most important thing in a girls surfboard is that it is narrow enough to paddle. i remember trying to teach a girl and she could barely get her forearms wet on my longboard. make it thin enough for her to easily carry it under arm. she will have alot easier time paddling a 5’10" of appropriate width then even a 7’ thats too wide.
Ive also heard if your making it a thruster (not 2+1) Girls could benit with closer fin positionings to accommadate smaller feet (this I’ve heard from McTavish.)
Josh.
PS… 4 the reccord: I am not saying all girls have small feet.
deja vu ? …
…similar to…
both fun…it’s all good !

My thing on width for boards for small people: If you can’t carry the board comfortably under your arm and walk with it, then it’s too wide for you. Because not only are you going to have to come up with some weird, uncomfortable way of carrying your board and walk really slowly with it and bug all your friends/boyfriends/parents, but more importantly you’re not going to be able to paddle it right because you won’t be able to reach your arm in the water.

Yep, Mars, that’s a very good point…it applies to fully grown adults just as much as growing teenagers and grommets !

…after you wrote that, I went and measured the distance from under my arm to the tips of my fingers . 24". Then I measured from the armpit to my knuckles…about 20". *** Interesting ! 90% of my boards lately have been 20" wide.
…does anyone else use these sort of ‘guidelines’ when making a board, I wonder ?
And the thickness guideline… any similar methods used for that, I wonder ?
*** CORRECTION !!! *** …[damn metric tape measures!] … 20" is the measurement from my armpit to my wrist .
Armpit to knuckles = 24" .
Armpit to tip of fingers = 28".
Right, I hope that clarifies things !!
Thanx all for the comments.
My arm pit to knuckles is 21"
Is that how wide my board is supposed to be? It seems tooooo wide to me.
I am 5’8" and weigh 125 lbs.
How thick should my board be?
How long did it take you to make your first board?
One of the first guys I worked for made the comment that it must feel good under your arm, just as the guys above have stated. To me that is not always true, but a good rule of thumb.
To me that also includes the rail shape, must feel nice in your hand, not too thick and eggy, not too thin and knifey. Don’t worry, there’s lots in between.
My advice is leave it wide tailed, it will generally turn easier, paddle easier, and just be more fun in most conditions. Play with all sorts of singles, but puting in side boxes will allow you to try everything.
I would put a little more kick in the nose, just the last foot/six inches, not enough to change the general rocker. Less prone to nosediving, and it will look a lot more modern.
Whatever you do be happy with your choice and have fun, that’s what it’s all about.

No, it doesn’t have to be that wide. I was just saying that if it was any wider than that, you may not be able to paddle it correctly. Narrower is fine if that’s what you like. (my armpit to knuckle is more like 24" but no way am I surfing a board that wide!)
