Has anyone had any issues with the screw insert on Lokbox boxes it appears that the insert pulled out on mine. Can I just bore the hole out a bit to remove the old glue and re-epoxy the insert back in or does the insert have a wedge at the bottom which flares the insert a bit to anchor the insert in? If it does take a wedge mine appears to be missing it. I imagine if the insert pulls out before the tab bends then the weak link is the insert not the tab. The tab was not bent so I don’t think it was struck in any way. I did see partial corrosion on the outside of the insert so I imagine that water got between the insert and the plastic surrounding it. What about heating up the insert and melting it back into the box?
Hmmm, first one i’ve heard about coming out. If you can get quickset epoxy from the hardware store, that would probably be the easiest. When we switched over to the brass inserts we did extensive testing. 700 ft pounds of torque to rip them out. I’d like to see the board. Where are you located? Send me an e-mail at lokbox@sbcglobal.net Thanks Jim
I’ve had a recent issue with my Lokbox too - fell off mid lip bash and caught my fin going over, snapped clean off but it’s left my Lokbox in a state of shock!
They’re still relatively new here in the UK so not many shapers use them so I’m wondering how best to repair it?
Glass over or reset the whole thing? I don’t really want to screw up the tint but a water tight board is the most important thing.
Stress fractures all around the edge, a big chunk of glass missing from one end and movement between the boards glass and the box on one side…
Not sure what to do, so any advice would be much appreciated!
Hi swordfish, sorry about the mishap. You need to first install another fin into the box, tighten it down, and flex it from side to side and see if the box has broken loose from the foam underneath. If it has, the box will need to be routed out, and a new one installed. If it still seems attached underneath, and fairly solid, you can just sand down the area over the box and around the box about 2 to 3 inches around the box using 60 or 80 grit paper, then re-glass over the box. This will remove all that loose glass when you grind it down. However i fear if you’ve hit hard enough to snap off the fin, the box will most likely need to be replaced. Please e-mail me at lokbox@sbcglobal.net so i can help walk you through the repair. Thanks Jim
okey doke, thanks for getting in touch, I’ll try it tonight, I’ve been waiting a couple of weeks just to dry it out before attempting a repair. I noticed you mentioned Sam from S Wales in another thread - I know a sam homfray - not sure if it’s the same sam! but if so - I’ve already spoken to him so, I might try and get him to give me a hand as I know he’s got a router and has already attempted a few lokbox set ups…
Howzit swordfish, I hope you flused it with fresh water before drying out because any salt left will make for a bad repair. Also flushing a few times with fresh water will make it dry faster, like in a day or so.Aloha,Kokua
Howzit Doggie?!? I told Lokbox to contact you. He’s coming over and will be promoing his product I still need some supplies, soon as I can organize. I’ll call you. Aloha…RH
well I cleaned the hole for the screw insert placed some bitchen quickset eposy and let it cure overnight, I went to install the fin back in and the insert popped out again completely encased in epoxy. Any Ideas? besides replacing the box?
