Because I’m Big and Fat and Old and I want a fish! HA! HA! Just kidding Thomas…I run into this all the time with wanting these “oversized shapes” no problem…That’s why I make my own…got tired of having to debate my shaper.
Nice boards BTW! Very Nice!

Thanks Woody. As I too get older and fatter, I find that max planing area is key, followed by flatter rocker and then thickness. I started shaping myself, for exactly the same reason as you. It seems I've come full circle.
BgSurfer...I held your beliefs re: large fish, until I shaped and rode a few. Last iteration was a 7-2 diamond-tail, double-bump, quad-fin variation of a Pavel Speed Dialer Fish. After riding it, I realized I could have gotten the same or better performance from a low rockered, tri-fin egg. Then, earlier this week I spent two days riding a borrowed 7-8 fish that I shaped almost a year ago. It had nice speed, and hold (with Geppie keels, I guess so) but just not very responsive compared to my 7-6 hybrid shape. Improve turning performance of the 7-8 fish with smaller-based fins? sure. Maybe go tri? quad? Add a little more rocker in the tail, why not? Pull in the tail a bit...ya see where I'm going? But, half of the fun of shaping comes from building what you think will work, riding it and messing with it some more, until you find the ride experience you're looking for, or not. You'll learn either way. Good luck on your journey and be sure to post what you come up with.
I understand what you are saying. But the modification I’ve wanted to try isn’t along traditional lines. My original mod was actually intended for an eliptical when I realized a fish variant should work better.
I might increase rocker but I won’t be pulling in the tail. Also, because of thrusters and quads, I feel like rail foil progression stagnated.
Call me crazy, but I’m still a fan of the single fin, which I think could work well with what I want to do.
I could be wrong. But when I get this focused about an idea, there’s a solid chance it will work. I’ve been pondering on it for several years now.
While I won’t be getting big air – never wanted it anyway – I like to think older isn’t a handicap.
Hey guys a quick bump…I was cleaning up some computer files today and stumbled upon a 7-9 Batfish template I shaped it a couple of years ago and it was a blast! Ended up trading it for get this… 300 yards of 7oz cloth! If you want a copy just PM me and I’ll shoot it out tomorrow. Looking for a picture…this one may be better suited to a couple of your projects.
Woody
Would like to see the photo and template of your “BaitFish.”
PM sent.
I unknowingly pulled my tail in on my late six four “grouper” of a fish 8" tiptotip cut x4" deep! He put medium vee -it flew in juice, and cruised fine in mush…you’ll need vee panels. Not sure if you need, or don’t need to pull tail or not?
I the “full nosed” version myself and twin fin. Later I’ll build a quad, but i got a green pig long board in the works aft fishey.
The double foiled twins felt free in turns FWIW. Low sixty forties rails, beaked nose…da kine lol! Twin keel fins double foiled I heard were the original setup.
Folk’s - I got a gentleman who wants me to shape him a 6’6" quad fish - like my JETFISH. Anyway, what do you guy’s think? Would increased vee panels be the answer to loose n it up? I’m thinking maybe adding just a notch more tail kick to help him swing it around n stuff… I’ll get the specs he wants in the next days. But wondering if I should keep the fish tail normal, or pull it in slightly, and add vee?
I’ve recently acquired a Gary McNeill 7’2" × 22&1/2" × 3&1/8" cv2 fish and am actually blown away how much better it surfs compared to egg shapes I have owned (and I’ve owned quite a few).
Surfed it in excellent point waves at 3-4’ plus, open beachbreaks at 1-2’ and a rivermouth at 3-4’. It’s a desert island board. Sorry but don’t have the tech smarts to reduce the pics on my phone to a lowly 20mbs. Edit: cool pic uploaded.
It really came to life with the gtf-1 carbon twin fins and dvs sharktooth trailers.
