Long Island small wave short board?

Just got a great deal (50 bucks) on a never used before Rusty.

I was out back cleaning the large tool shed at my job. As I was moving boxes out of the shed, I saw the ankle part of a leash just sitting there under the corner of a box. I followed the leash to the back of the shed, behind some more boxes, and 'lo, and behold, there was a board attached to it, just sitting against the wall. I later asked my boss who’s it was, apparently his son bought it 2 years ago, and never used it… it’s just been sitting in that shed ever since. He asked me if I wanted it, and told me to make “any offer I want”… I casually just said $50, pointing to a small ding on the rail (looks like something fell on it), just to see what he would say. 2 seconds later I was reaching for my wallet, and brushing off some cob webs from my new board.

Anyhow… the purpose of me writing this; is to ask if this board has any hope at all for the smaller/weaker waves that come along with summer here on central Long Island(NY). Waist high, with the occasional (read: rare) chest high set is all we’ll be getting until hurricane swell, or winter… which ever comes first.

I’m about 5’6". 130-135Lbs. (I’m 20, and don’t expect to get much taller.)

The board is 6’2" X 19.25" X 2.25"

11.75" @ 12 inches from nose.

14.75" @ 12 inches from tail.

It has a squash tail.

I did some rough measurements (with a decent ruler, on the floor) for rocker. At the very tip (nose) of the board it’s about 5" from the floor (give or take 1, or 2, 8th’s of an inch). At the very end (tail) of the board it’s about 2.25" from the floor (give or take 1, or 2, 8th’s of an inch).

The board has future fin boxes, and had F6’s with it… I’m gonna be swapping them out with F3’s, JC2’s, or a combination of both. I’m hoping it’ll loosen it up abit.

I’m seriously considering just shelling out the money for a fish, or long board… but if I can use this board for smaller stuff that’d be excellent. (<- I’m a very poor college student, in need of a new car too. Thats why I’m so strapped for cash.) Anyhow, thanks alot guys. Any comments, or advice will be very much appreciated.

hi Arnold !

sounds like you got a good deal there mate …very good !

if you’re a good strong paddler I think that board should be just fine …a mate of mine about your size and a little heavier [not much] rides his 18" wide and 2 1/4" thick 6’ Rusty in our [perth west oz] piddly summer piddlers [!]

Give it a few surfs , and you’ll know . [please, fix the ding , too !]

ben

thats plenty-o-board for waist high plus…

most shorties for your size run 5’11 x 18.2 with a 13.5 tail…yours is more wide like an 80’s shape but with modern rocker…if you know how to surf you’ll be fine maybe even stoked

Yeah riding isn’t a problem, I’ve been surfing since I was 12. I haven’t surfed in about a year (my first year of school was land locked; in Kansas, but I’m back in NY for good now.) but, I don’t think you forget how to ride anyway.

Now that I look at this board closer, it’s got some delam in some areas (That shed was metal, and was like an oven. It easily gets over 110 degrees in the summer heat.) Either way it doesn’t take away from the fact that this thing was a bargain, and a half, lol.

Just a little patch of delam by the rail ding. And 2 other little patches on the deck. Aside from the rail ding (which barely penetrates the foam at all) the board is pretty much water tight… theres no yellowing, or anything else that I can see either; so I’m still pretty psyched out from finding it.

I’m actually planning on using this thing for chest, and below (sloppy/no power). For anything chest, and above I have an Arakawa that I love. I used to have a long board that was good for around here, but I think my parents took it with them when they moved to Florida. I know they didn’t throw it out, or sell it, because my dad surfs too, and he loved that board. Charlie Bunger shaped it for him back in the day, so if anyone ever got rid of that board, I think he’d just go on insane.
