How’s it going guys? Haven’t been around much lately. Finished up my first quarter at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in December and am loving it. My birthday’s coming up, so I was thinking a board would be a great thing to get (parents were asking). I’m still unsure as to what I should get. I want to ride shortboards eventually. I have alot of experience with various boardsports other than surfing (wakeboarding especially) and am pretty decent on a 9’ or so longboard. Since this will be the only board I will be able to get for a while I’d rather get a board that’s a bit hard to ride and grow into it then have a board I get bored of in a couple of months. What are your suggestions? I’d like to get something used from here or elsewhere.
7’ - 7’4" round pin should be pretty versatile just about everywhere…
19 wide, 2 3/4 thick…
Does it match your checklist?
• 19 years old (or so?) = enviable strength/weight ratio
• Pismo
• The R, if you meet people
• Trips north to the Lane
• Trips south to Rincon
• Northern Baja
• Summer mushburgers needing more foam
• Winter swells needing more paddle power
• Fits inside most small cars
• Fits up stairs and inside dorm / apartment rooms
etc.
Yep, I think it does
Don’t fall in love with a pro-style 6’3 thruster. Its checklist is half as long as the one above. Same thing with a gorgeous glossy 9’6" noserider. Go with the biggest checklist for your money and surf the hell out of it.
If you’re 5’6, 140… scale down to 6’10. 6’3, 210 - up to 7’6. But keep the basic concepts intact and surf it every chance you get for 2-3 years. At the end of all that, you’ll be good enough to surf any board you want, because you’ll have been appropriately equipped to have seen all kinds of waves & conditions.
Benny’s board sounds perfect. I’d go 2 + 1 fin set up for versatility.
Wetsuit? Never lock into a brand…go for fit. Try on as many different brands in the same size and thickness as you can tolerate (it’s a sweaty hassle trying on wetsuits in a store) cause every label cuts from different patterns. One brand that someone swears by might fit you like crap…Also, stay clear of cheap “remainders”, the advancements are making newer suits better than their predecessors.
