Goedemorgen / Goodmorning everyone
I would like to share my second board build. I got really enthusiastic after finishing (and riding) my first-ever board, which was a 6’4 eggshape singlefin. (build thread: http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/build-thread-first-project-64-eps-blockfoam?page=1#comment-495269 it seems like only the first page is showing… but could be my mistake)
Before starting I upgraded the shed a little by mounting some side lights and I bought myself a speed-adjustable angle grinder/poliser with soft pads. Much better then all the handsanding I did on the egg, did grow some serious biceps though
The project I’m currently working on is 9’2 for the smaller max. waisthigh surf on the dutch coastline. I was lucky to get a couple free planks of 4mm Western Red Cedar from the shipyard I work at. I cut out the desired rocker, then hotwired the blank from EPS blockfoam. And glued it all together with lam resin. I got the crazy idea to tint the resin as you can see in one of the photo’s, but i probably didn’t put enough tint in it, as it is hardly noticable. oh well… better next time
I traced the outline and sanded the blank down to where the foam sits flush with the stringer. I like to hotwire the foam a little larger then the actual stringer and then sand it down, so I can correct mistakes when hotwiring.
I just finished the rails, starting with the planer and finishing with 80 en 120 grid sandpaper. Yesterday I taped the stringer and mixed up some spackle. I sanded down one layer of spackle, but I wasn’t pleased yet with the result so I put another layer of spackle on top. I now have a smooth flush deck surface. Next up is spackling the bottom and the paining fun can start!
As for paining, I’ve read almost every topic on sways about paining eps and epoxy. I decided to go with paining the spackled surface and laminating over with clear lam resin. I want to give the top half (nose to center) and bottom half (center to tail) of the board different colors. So I figured tinting the lam resin is not the easiest option (although it is probably the safest for bonding issues). I could also spraypaint the hotcoat with a clearcoat (or glosscoat?) over… but then there could be problems with sanding into the colorwork. Let’s just try and see what happens! I will be updating this thread as I continue
Any comments will be much appreciated!
(Yes, I’m making two boards at the same time with a friend, much more fun drinking beer together )
