Great site .Hope someone can help me on some 9ft longboard designs for head high beach breaks . Im a first surfboard builder newbe and would appreciate anyone who can give me some specific design advise for a 9ft longboard to take steep wave drops on 5-6ft beach breaks .Would be glad of any input
Frederick-We have a lot of steep beach breaks in my area.I like a board as follows:17 1/2 nose,22 width,13 1/2 hip. A good amount of tail rocker and vee helps with the drops and getting into the wave. A moderate amount in the nose is good as well. The blanks I prefer for these are the 95S and 94B. If you already have a blank, work with what you have.Good Luck.TedK.
yeah, the 9’4" b blank has some good performance rocker. i will be ordering some soon. i haven’t been too happy with the 9’1"y…it’s way to thick. what do you guys use for classic styled 9’s???
I actually prefer the 91Y,99,and 101Y for my classic noseriders. 94B isn’t as thin as you think. I can get a 3 1/4 thick board out of it. I like 91Y cause it gives you some foam to work with. TEDK.
9’4"B is really only thin on the ends. I have done a few 9’1"Y’s with added rocker and they are the boards I get the best feedback from. The most popular rocker has been +1/2" nose last 12" and +3/4" tail last 24" Sounds like a ton of rocker, and it is…but it works! Got the numbers from Clay Bennitt. Good shapin to ya and have fun, Scott
I like to go to beach breaks ! People there dont use leashes once I ripped this guys longie off as he was swimming in I got that board in my car and sped off just in time boy was that guy pissed off
Go no longer than 7’6 my friend, 20.5 wide, 2.75 thick, low hard rails, nose 16, tail 14 pintail will handle steep beach breaks so much better than a big ol log. Sharper, harder turns, real cutbacks with no funky layback or wide poo stance due to excessive board length. It will meet the shortboards halfway, but you will keep a touch of the longboard feel. Dont need no longboard glide when the waves are good, the speed is already there. The cycle begins again. As it was in the late 60’s, the leaders have started to go shorter, realising there is no need for the extra 2 feet of foam when you are trying to get barrelled. It will only be a matter of time before the truth starts to trickle down, and once again the masses will be compelled to follow. Dont be left behind lugging your elephant gun out into 6foot surf. Nothing worse than being caught inside with an oversized load.
just get something with a little more nose rocker – besides that you will be fine – not much, just a little – it will make that bottom turn easier thats all
