hey, could somebody please explain how to install a longboard fin box… correctly? tools, process and what not. I looked in the archives but i kept getting confused with so many different ideas. what is the most common way? thankyou! Sean
The most common way to cut the hole is with a router using a router jig that is taped, vaccuumed or clamped in place. The hole is then cut and the box is set with resin. This is usually done after the hot coat and before the sand.
Greg, so I route it out after hotcoat while clamped… then fill with resin… drop in box… sand smooth. Should I mix the resin with anything like milled fiber or cabosil? What type of resin, lam or hotcoat? let me know, please. thanks for all your helpfull info! Sean
Sean, router out the board just a little bigger than the box. End of the box should be around 6 inches from the tail. Use some cabosil to thicken the resin so the box will stay level and square with the bottom of the board. Also if you create a dam around the box notch the resin will not flow onto the deck. When the resin has set then you can sand down flush with the bottom of the board. Also tape the top of the fin box so resin doesn’t flow into it when you do your topcoat. Stay solid Dave
