Longboard gun fin set up

I’m about to start construction of a 9-0 longboard gun. I’m intending the board mostly for solid overhead to DOH waves at the Cove (PV). I’ve never shaped a longboard before so I figure this is a half step in that direction. The closest thing I could find on the internet to what I have in mind was the “round pin longboard” from the patagonia surfboards website.

I’m trying to think what fin set up. I was thinking bonzer 5. But really I don’t know. What would be the characteristics of tri, 2+1, single, maybe even a Griffin 5?

Any thoughts?

single fin

rounded pin

ain’t no sin

you’ll fit right in.

IMHO a proper 2+1 setup will give you the right combination of free-pivoting turns with the extra holding power when the faces get steep.

I’ve been working on this type of board for a few years now and

without giving too much away, I should say that you need to be

a bit larger (9’2" minimum) for PV Cove if you are planning on

catching waves even when it is double overhead at Indicators.

As far as fin set-ups go, I agree with Keith that a single would

work great there, but I prefer a 2 + 1 set-up that is a bit more

adustable to your surfing style. Here are the spec’s I would

recommend. This set-up has been surfed in head high (and

below) Huntington Pier and double + overhead Mentawais with

success. Center box (10.5") at 7" up, sides at 17.5" up, 1 3/8"

in from rail and 1/8" toe (2" - 2.5" off nose). For a 9’ to 9’8" board

with a 13.5 - 14.5" tail, use a 8" performance center fin and a

3.5" (sb1 in futures) side bite fin. Set the center fin towards the

middle of the box so that the base of the fin is in line with the tips

of the side fins. If you want a looser board, move the fin up in 1/2"

increments, if you want it stiffer, move it back by the same amounts.

For PV Cove in OH+ I would not go smaller than a 7.5" hp fin in the

center. Larger sides mean smaller centers. Hope this helps and

TRUST me, when I tell you to TRUST Keith. Only thing I’d do different would be to make it a squaretail.

Thanks for the feedback so far. This is close to what I have in mind

How come my link is dead?

Look familar?

2 x OH at Indicators with the Boneyard

showing concrete on the sets. The walk

back of the trail had 2 stops where we kissed

the ground to thank G that we made it in

alive… LOL

if singlefin, here’s one that caught my eye recently…

Juan.

2 plus one’s

still lots of fun

with sidebites small

the thing will haul

I like a squaretail

but can’t make it rhyme?

dammit

where’s eecummings when you need him…

Ha! That’s my old apartment in the background. I hardly recognized it without fog.

…hello,

you can t go wrong with a bonzer type set up if big but hollow, its like single fin with guts

very similar feeling with a single fin but with a bit more possibilities if you know how to ride it properly

here 2 different planshapes in 9´2´´

the one with the main fin glassed on, has all the cluster a bit forward

speed finish coated

the speed racer one has the front runners foiled different than the rears and less tilt all than the Yellow

gloss/speed finish coat hybrid
