Longboard laminating layers

Hello, I’m about to glass a 7’6" mini-mal-type and was looking for recommendations for the number of layers with 4oz glass. Would a regular shortboard configuration work? 1x - 4oz bottom and 2x - 4 oz top or would that be too fragile even with a gloss coat. Would 2x bottom and 2.5x top work alright, including a deck pad (2/3 board length). Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Canuk

Hey There are no absolutes for glassing any size board. Depends what you are looking for. Hi performance funboarding, go light. Durable and long lasting, go double bottom, 2.5 top. Most, not all funboards are glassed with 5 or 6 oz. cloths. If you fall, or are still learning, go heavy.

suggest 1 layer 6 ounce bottom, 1 on top, 2/3 length deck patch and if you want it to last, a small foot patch. Use 4 ounce and you’ll be having to make another all too soon.

All I have is 4oz so it seems that my best option for a longer lasting higher durability board is 2x 4oz bottom, 2.5x 4oz top–like I mentioned before, I only have 4 oz to use right now. Although I’m new to making boards, I’m no beginner surfer–just making a fun board for those really small days, or to sell. Thanks for the input, Canuk

You want it to last right? Go 2 layers on the bottom and 3 full layers on top. another layer of 4oz on top isn’t going to affect a thing performance wise.
